Massage the muscle that's tweeked. This might not be the muscle that hurts.
If I get lower back pain it comes from between my shoulder blades. So find the sore spot not the painful bit.

Stretch as much as possible. If you can kneel down, reach your arms out on the floor in front of you and sink down slowly, stretching your back out for 30 seconds to a minute at least.
Ibuprofen will help reduce any swelling on a nerve.

Kneeling down is a possibility, getting back up a different matter !
Moving around dose ease it , but can only do it for so long thank you

A hard bed helps. Pull the mattress onto the floor, put a sheet of plywood under the mattress if it's left on the bed, or long term get an orthopaedic mattress. Totally in sympathy with you. Personally, I would steer clear of the manipulating quacks as they can do a lot of harm, but others will disagree.

I have several stretches that I do when I have an episode. One is to lie face down across the bed and wiggle your bum from side to side for a while while trying to pull yourself forward with your arms. This eases the tension slightly and mobilises the spasming muscle fibres. Find a bar to hang off where your feet are just off the ground. Long soak in a full bath always helps as the water holding your body weight starts to allow the muscles to relax but takes at least 15-20 mins before that effect starts to happen.

The main thing is to not sit or lie or stand too long, keep switching between the three way more regularly than normal. Ibuprofen to take the edge off the pain and to make it easier to keep moving by reducing the severity of the pain.

thanks all

it eased off by Saturday, i did have two days in bed last week which did help. since then ive found standing / walking or lying flat the best positions, sitting inc driving are not so good. The pain is defiantly to one side and slightly towards my hip. i will just have to be sensible and not do too much !

What is it about having a bad , (now just stiff) back that makes me want to cut my toe nails so badly? last week it wasn't remotely on the to do list. Now putting socks on is an effort , im itching to set to with the nail clippers
