Bad back

Had an outpatients consultation about my lower back pain (lumbago?) and was given a set of exercises to strengthen all the muscles in the front of the torso which I do twice a day. I also spend a couple of minutes on a thing called back magic which is supposed to stretch out the muscles a bit into the correct curve.
I'm feeling better and freer than I have for a long time.

Is lumbago an age thing ?

Biofreeze is very good when the back is pulling tight and wont release

Deep heat will be good to inject heat into the lower back when going to work or use it.

My back suffered for a long time due to rugby and now since training deadlift block pulls its getting hell of a lot better not far off 300kg deadlift this year

I was pulling a shoulder or back every few months ,ended up trying a osteopath a few times, fairly good made me jump about, twinge. went to make another appointment, oh sorry he's not available, having an op on his back! Have since been using a nice gentle lady who works out of a small room above the chemists shop, yes I know ;), I did wonder, but gave me exercises to do every morning, I might see her once every 2 yrs now, if she's lucky,

I have back trouble too, and fortunately my aunt is a pyshio, highly recommend going to one, There is no jumping about on your back, they will first diagnose where to pain is coming from and then treat it there and give you specific exercises to deal with it, She also tells me that swimming, using a cross trainer or doing yoga will help long term to build up core muscles, havnt tried the yoga yet but I am tempted.

Lay flat on the floor face down, on a hard surface. Push your upper third up on your elbows and stretch your head/neck backwards....re-aligns the natural "S" curve of the spine. Bit like doing a plank but more bone than core focused.

I was anti pain killers . but after an mri which diagnosed Facet Arthropathy they said Taking very strong pain killers will allow you to keep moving which is what helps it .I had already tried just about everything else which just aggravated it .

Done my back in yesterday evening wrestling two runaways back up a wooded hillside (thanks for them ewes @Guiggs haha )

Can anyone tell me difference between the hot or cold gels/sprays available? (I know one is heat & one is cold!!) Which do you need when got bad back? Took 20 minutes to put socks on this morning and 5 attempts to get in the truck! :banghead:

Waste of money - won't deal with the cause only symptoms. Get to a good physio pronto.

Don't know if this is current practice but was told the best thing was to straight away lie on a hard floor.
Not always possible or how long to lie. Suppose if you lie for long enough the pain will die away but so will you!

This. There is a book called 'fix your back' or some such and it works.

I once stepped over a baby gate and went down like a bag of spuds and didn't get up until the drugs had worn off. Went to a very brilliant NHS physio. Staggered in, expecting to fall and go into spasm any moment and walked out a changed man. She made me do some stretches and convinced me it was all in my mind and she was right. Won't be the same for everyone of course.

Whereabouts is the pain? Low or upper? I had a severely bad back last year, got to the point where I could hardly walk/stand up. I had to do some excercises for it. I was watching a fitness instructor who knows about this stuff and he says that, and this is very interesting, when we are babies our bodies feeds our discs in our backs, but when we reach the age of 12 it no longer does that, so in order for the discs in our backs to be fed we have to do excercises for them, to keep them supple and working. Here are a few basic excercises for them...
Here is a vid where he shows you wha to do. However I would recommend that if you're in a lot of pain atm to not do these. I found to relieve pain I lay on my back, with help, on the floor and I put my legs stretch out and curved at the knees, straight up, then (if it is too painful for you to do) ask your wife or partner or family member to gently move your legs over onto the floor right to left, holding them down gently for 5-10 secs on each side and gently moving them over, do this about 5 times with your arms stretched out keeping your back straight all the time. Another excercise I did, with help, was to stretch both legs out on the floor and gently pull one of your legs into your stomach, leg being folded up into a curve and you hold it there with your hands for 5-10 secs, gently ease it back into the stretched out position and repeat with the other leg, do this 3-4 times each way and then relax lying there for a minute. To get up roll over onto your front and lift yourself off the floor, do not attempt to lift up yourself with your back. Hope this helps and let me know how you get on? :) Oh and I almost forgot plenty of fluids and anti inflamatories, can be achieved by taking lemon juice with warm honey and water and a grating of fresh ginger, plenty of ginger, also make sure you have a lot of oils in your diet, olive oil for example is very good and keeps the joints well oiled :) also paracetemol, not exceeding the dose, will help to relieve the inflamation. My only other advice would be rest, taking it easy and not lifting things for a long time! I also found that massaging the affected area with warm oil and a few drops of essential oils is very good for loosening it up :)
All the best

Oh I almost forgot... Remember to do the excercises twice daily, morn and even for a few days before you will start to feel the benefits, if you can't make it 5 times each way then lessen it and gradually work your way up to that :) Also a warm wheatcushion on the affected area, over clothing, helps too. If you add a little sprinkling of turmeric powder to the warm water honey lemon juice and ginger that also helps relieve inflamation.

Some good tips on this thread (y)
My back went this morning, or rather I set the ball rolling last night after I stopped a cow lying out with my knees into her and my back braced against the wall, and finished it off this morning bending over to pick some buckets up-it just went :inpain:
I had an hour on the floor after breakfast, but I seem to be better on a dining chair. Milking was steady but bearable, calf feeding a bit ouchy. My lower spine is twingey and at the mo feel like I've a had a kicking in the kidneys :( Going to try a hot bath now. Any tips other than a beer to knock me out when I come back?

I'll see how I wake up in the morning  Might try the cold shower if I make it through milking.
The table sounds interesting. My back has gone sporadically since I was 13 and I had an MRI on my neck last year after 6 months of physio and acupuncture did very little. A few of the vertebrae are compressed and I have some exercises, but the table intrigues me :)

We have another bottle with your name on it (y)
I'll be getting a name
