Bad winter on way!

I know what you mean. Lowest it got to here was -21 ( in a bit of a frost pocket). The air was that cold it hurt to breathe. When it warmed up to -5 it felt tropical. The novelty of thawing water troughs soon wore off!
Shouldn't say this but for some reason I have only one outside tap that freezes and I don't need that ! fortunalty and have very little insulation weird but im happy with it ! doors tractors etc etc etc etc all freeze up tho its not till it thaws you relise how much harder work its in them conditions.

It was the winter I came here, at its worst I was spending 5 or 6 hours a day on tronghs. The next summer I put a new water supply into some of the sheds ( was quite a few problems with the old system) and haven't had them freeze up since. I think the difference is the old pipes were just below the concrete so the water was almost frozen before it came above ground, my new pipes are all 2 foot 6 below ground then come straight up to each trough. A bigger bore pipe probably helps a bit as well.

Aye may well be, mine is quite new as well and pipes quite deep, my water comes from a spring 1500 feet up and never freezes either, might sound silly but I have often wonderd if there is some mineral content in the water that helps or im maybe just been silly ! deep pipes is probably the best conclusion, thank god I rarely get frozen pipes tho, I remember as a small child my father and brother having a whole farm and milking parlour frozen solid everyday for weeks.

Nothing like starting morning milking and everything is hard as a rock from the cold!
