Badger cull

This could be a very significant development, and help bring come common sense to the whole aspect of the harm caused by the explosion in badger numbers.

What we need are nationwide groups of sensible farmers and other countrymen (not the NFU) who can form a lobby/advisory
body as and when the need arises.

I think you will find that the majority of sensible farmers are the ones that have implemented to cull through the hard work and money from the NFU.
You will also note that it is the NFU that has brought this Judicial Review which will be expensive to bring and very unlikely that any costs will be awarded. It would be very unlikely a group of "sensible farmers and other countrymen" would finance this type of court case.
I presume you are not an NFU member but are happy to criticise them even though the sensible farmers within the NFU have been the ones who began the culls against enormous opposition!

I read it as the need for somebody independent but I may be wrong.

For the record.
There are plenty of non nfu members who have put money time / effort into the job, including of course totally unconnected taxpayers money ,via defra.

I take your point, and yes I have been a long-standing NFUS member and one-time office holder.

But there is a lot of wisdom within the farming and rural communities, including those with sporting, conservation, veterinary, scientific and communication expertise. Individually these people have little or no voice, but local groups made up of, say, 15 to 20 such individuals, could provide a valuable means of getting our message across.

The NFU has one major disadvantage - all its elected leaders are temporary, and very few if any have training in communication skills.

Sometimes it is an advantage to have elected leaders as temporary!!

The NFU run some excellent media training and I have been on a number over the years. All office holders are usually offered it.

It is still the case that those who have least to lose (like Symonds - I.e nothing at all) have the most to say on eradication of zoonotic Tuberculosis in our country. And that is just plain wrong.

The current system is heavily weighted towards cattle measures, leaving the hallowed badger to piddle all over your grassland and cattle feed crops. Meanwhile, as the scattered farmer led and financed cull areas drop the herd incidence and dead cattle in parts of the HRA, the Edge area is bubbling nicely, keeping GB right at the top of the list of EU member states for TB incidence. An appalling and ultimately costly legacy which will affect trade.
