Do most use a proper bag lifter for lifting big bags of seed and fertilizer ? Is there any guidance or safety warnings about not using one and using pallet tines . Just interested as we use pallet tines at work and I feel we should be using the proper tool

We use pallet tines and feel they are safe enough. I think most people have bag lifters to make it easier to unload curtain siders without hitting the roof or stacking in low sheds

Wagon drivers wince when they see pallet tines.
I built bag lifter 8 years ago.
I've been tempted to use it for lifting back of trailed sprayer up to change wheels.

Bag lifter is a pain in the arse for seeing the far side pole in a normal telehandler once you get up to the height the bags are on a wagon . Absolutely brilliant with a pivot steer or fore end loader tho

We just use bag lifter. Don't feel safe working under bags on pallet forks. Handy for filling low sheds too.

Cherry products do a smart one where you can adjust width of arms manually. Was on olly agricontracts blog the other day.

Use a bag lifter since we had fork tines cut the loops on 1 tonne bags and it landed on the ground
would not want one landing on the spreader or drill let alone the person undoing the seed bag

also make stacking and unloading curtain sides easier

Pretty sure there is a picture on the side of every bag of fert telling you not to use unprotected pallet tines. Bag lifter is great, safer and quicker unloading wagons, much better filling the drill and I can fit twice as many bags in our low shed. Money well spent.

There are a brilliant bit of kit and would not be without it just on safety terms alone
We have a 3cx on pin and cone so can now fill drills very easily due to height restrictions

The important thing is not to use sharp edged tines - new ones are particularly inclined to cut the loops.
A sleeve or tube that slides onto the existing tine is acceptable. Otherwise, take the sharp edge off the tine with a file. (Caution - unauthorised modification of lifting equipment........)

I’ve seen some pretty shocking driving in the past. People crowding back and sliding the bags down the tine pushing through snagging the other side so it’s all frayed then wonder why the loops break. Being careful is far better than any piece of machinery

I was going to write the same thing: fine file, run lengthways along the edge of the fork.
New tines have a very square sharp edge, older tines have knicks in them that cut sliding bag loops like a hacksaw blade.

I’ve a home made baglifter 6bags, but I also have made some sleeves out of round pipe slid over pallet tines for lifting 2dumby bags deep works on telescopic and little industrial

I think these we fill are supposed to be ton bags (builders bags)

Yes and when you order 1T bags and 600kgs turn up it’s a royal pita, so much so I just sent them away the second time, they haven’t done it again. Or you could get the adjustable one as mentioned above.

I've just bought a bag lifter from Weaving. Not used yet but looks good.

Price of fertiliser has gone up so much I only need to spill one bag less and it's paid for!
