All very well recycling it, but its not good when it ends up in the sea in far east.
And small bale string is worth its weight in gold. I am seriously thinking of 'buying!!' a reel!Never enough of that, is your farm not like mine, held together with that.
see quick fixes , bodges and creations thread for ideasthere must be some way of recycling big square bale string? Is there and I just don't know about it?
Drives me mad having to tip it into landfill for it to sit there for eternity…be miles better letting us burn it (legally )Dropped a trailer load at recycling place a few days ago and it's going straight to landfill, thought it would have it's own pile but just in with the general waste.
With the likes of sky news going on about plastic waste all the time I'm surprised bale wrap has not been talked about more. Especially since some farmers use the wind to get rid of their wrap...
…..carbon capture by default.Drives me mad having to tip it into landfill for it to sit there for eternity…be miles better letting us burn it (legally )
Yes…..carbon capture by default.
Time to dig out the old Add-H mould suppressant....How did we manage pre 1985 ? We made pish poor hay. But at least those that did make good hay found it was actually worth something.
Paying to dispose of plastic as well as buying it put an end to covering early potatoes. No bad thing IMO.
Thank you, fortunately all clear do it all again in 6 monthsgood luck with the read
But you got to have your plastic disposal tick for the Farm Assurance inspectors???and our bonfires make less smoke?
The manufacturer has been adding this for a whileTax has been on wrap in ROI for some years now. Think it’s about €6/roll.
It’s not just a tax on farmers. It’s across all industries for single use plastic with low amounts of recycled material in the product. It has been coming for a while. It’s just flipping annoying it’s coinciding with high prices.
Its like @Mark C says, if there is a low percentage of recycled material in the wrap it will be taxed. Its not just about you recycling it into stokboard which I applaud you for.But we pay to have the bale wrap taken away and recycled into stokboard. It’s not single use so why a single use tax??
It feels like we pay for it three times already. We pay for the rolls of wrap. We carefully place the clean (as possible) wrappers into a big bin liner (which we also buy) and pay to send it off to Solway Recycling. Then we buy it back again as Stokboard (which incidentally is my new favourite product, having recently replaced the plywood in a sheep weigh crate with stokboard). Its like @Mark C says, if there is a low percentage of recycled material in the wrap it will be taxed. Its not just about you recycling it into stokboard which I applaud you for.
Or make Hay!Just make bigger bales/chop everything/wilt a bit more.
Daft making 4'6" bales at 25% DM anyway.
Or make Hay!
Well done NFU

Sounds fairly flimsy defence tbh, after all grass silage will ferment without packaging although it may not be the one most desirable.
