Would it be cost effective to buy a cutter, tedder and baler for 2 acres or pay someone every year to do the job bearing in mind if I purchased the items to do the job I would have at least 3 to 10 acres of people asking me to bale for them

I'm only asking as I've got 4 acres and previously had 5 horses on the plot so I've not needed cut the grass but am now down to 2 and have got a lot of long grass

I got 4 acres cut this week 2 for hay, 2 for dry silage. So it was cut, 2 acres raked and bales wrapped the other 2 baled for hay. Asked what he had to get and the reply was £100+vat (don't know how you would do the sums there)

A local quoted me 300 for just over an acre

It’s because it’s not worth the work for an acre so they will charge a very expensive rate you still have to make the trip to mow them ted then ted again then row then bale then haul more money in the travel than what’s the jobs worth but it definitely isn’t worth buying you own kit to do as said above get someone to top it and buy bales if you need them be cheaper than you can make them for

16 in total 7 per bale. This was second cut that got too strong.

Get a contractor that does work on the farms nearby and ask them to do it when there at those farms, popping next door when suits them is far easier than getting them in 10+ miles to do 2acre….

Iv just had 35 acres done in 4 fields and not sure if that was worth the hassle for contractors, but they did for me more as a favor (charged at naac rates and paid as the baler left the field) because they had 500 acres to do around me. Very lucky to have such a settled period because if you have a small amount yours is going to be the one that gets wet!

Just top it and buy the hay,,
Less stress, cheaper in the long run, and hay quality will be better
