Ban on products from illegal deforestation

We have had bans on such products for years but with no enforcement it is meaningless. Even if it was enforced all it would cause is product displacement. In countries like Myanmar the teak is being harvested on an industrial scal and smuggled again in a sleek operation into China. They were so blase about it , I had no concern about filming it when I was there.
Palm oil , when it is loaded on a ship can be from anywhere as can soya, it willhave one set of papers at one end and a completely fresh set the other. Only concerted global action will stop it and that will certainly never happen while the profits are large and at least 50% of the worlds regimes, could not give a toss.

What they should be doing is banning all imports grown or reared on deforested land until large areas have been replanted and protected and not just the uk it should include all importing countries end of.

And instead of this being a story that highlights the benefits of home production, the BBC had someone on who framed the whole affair as a problem with British chicken being fed from crops grown on deforested areas.

BBC'S take on it
What a load of crap , surely the government should ban imports from deforested land , if producers have to prove they have not used it the big importers have already bought it into the country to use , ban the imports , how hard can it be to stop a boat from being unloaded , ffs

It is odd how the government doesn't want to back it up, leave it to industry to sort it out.
You'd think it would be a vote winner or is it their afraid if somebody suddenly can't get their soya milk they blame them , whereas if left to the industry they will blame the supermarkets?

One of the difficulties is the demand for the product remains, if a country takes a stand to not buy from land that has been deforested but other poorer countries can not follow then it just shifts who gets what from where and at what cost, it sounds like doing the right thing, yet really there is really no net change.
