Bangor Blue Slate

Does anyone have any good contacts for buying new Bangor slates, they are a fortune here in N.Ireland and quite hard to get. Just wondering if any of our Welsh members might have any tips on where they can be bought at a slightly more reasonable price? This is for a new build house, to tie in with existing slated outbuildings around the yard.

I believe the same band can be found in Canada and it’s cheaper to import it from there.

You have to blame the planners! Permission for slate quarries is not forthcoming. I helped build a large village store in NW Wales some years ago, and it was stipulated that the roof had to be slate, similar to those surrounding. We found it cheaper to import slate from Spain that matched in that case!

The Canadian slate is called Glendyne. We looked at using them as they came recommended. Worked out at approx £2 each. We ended using a Spanish slate called Hastings Ultra. Good finish. Slates graded well and little waste. £1.23 each. We used approx 4000 on a new build. Roof finished last week.
