Really ? You think the CAP has been good for UK agriculture ? Are you serious ?
I think the 50% of small family farms lost since 1972 might disagree.

Maybe losing 50% of small family farms is a 'good' result when compared to other parts of the economy. Every other sector has had far greater consolidation into massive conglomerates than agriculture has. Its why we buy from a handful of companies and sell to a handful of companies. You cannot look at farming in isolation to what has happened to the rest of the economy. Personally I'd say farming is more like it was 50 years ago than just about any other business sector. And that is undoubtedly down to CAP subsidies. Now whether thats a good thing or not is another argument.....

There are plenty of small farms in other EU countries, who have been under the same CAP. Successive UK Govt's implementation of CAP rules have led to a reduction in small farms here, which would have been even faster without the CAP.

UK has basically legislated their small farms away under advisory rules from the EU , (red tractor is part of that ) ,
i know of 2 engineering business that have closed due to excessive legislation, that their EU competitors didnt have to comply with , Im sure the brexit vote was pushed and voted for over the line by many that were caught with British interpretation of EU regs , (tony blair job creation schemes )

What legislation is that?

Many smaller farms producing store animals aren't RT

Volume bonuses and the constant drive for cheap food has killed smaller dairy herds or driven them to become more factory style.

Agriculture based on the American model is the issue
no , red tractor has added cost in the chain no matter who the product came from , had they kept all rules as equal to imports wouldnt be an issue , but they went on a crusade ,
that said they are just another assurance body across all industries that have made a nice niche for themselves from nothing , have another mate i see every saturday thats an industrial electrician (a bod) served 55 years in industry , in a spin once a year over re accreditation ,he would know more than any examiner , (his spanners and screwdrivers have to have a periodic test i kid you not ) its all got a load of bllx and strayed way off the mark for safety .

No RT in America and the small family farms have disappeared?

A lot of these smaller farms are disappearing though also. Handing them funny money for over 50 years has sealed their fate and tipped the industry into a shape it might not have been in had subsidies never been a thing.

Arguably all the CAP did was encourage environmental damage and lining the pockets of shareholders of huge ag-corporations.

The worlds gone mad and the idiots running round like headless
chickens is not helping.Has this goverment or any of them a real understanding of the mess food production in this country is in.Just how the hell is raising interest rates to control inflation going to work ,they want people to spend to keep the economy going but don’t spend because it raises inflation. To say food needs to be cheaper is just showing their stupidity,so it’s ok for gas,oil and tax etc to keep going up but food must never go up.As for small farms I would rather see them than large companies running thousands of acres for big city share holders .We are in this mess in this country because for too long it’s been run by those who are only interested in money for themselves and really have no idea of life outside their fat cat salary lives.Wake up in Parliament every country in the world is looking for food and the days of importing are going to look very different.

The writing was on the wall before Putin invaded in my opinion.

Some might say it's convenient how quickly this has happened and like it's all rolled into 1 with covid....
Yes, but that's crazy talk - just like "food supply to be kept at subsistence levels" and "population reduction through a series of limited wars and pandemics"

It's not a crime against humanity if people ask for it, the trick is creating situations where people ask for what they don't really want

There's very little stopping the bank of England / govt giving every adult that is on benefits a tax free £1000. It will all go straight back into the economy on food or fuel. Then round and round.

This is about the cost of food.

Food now means pizza, ready meals and lots of tasty, salty, sweet and fatty and easy to prepare items. It's all value added and highly processed. It's also much more expensive than the basic ingredients which our mums used to cook from

Food won't be too expensive until there is a sea change back to home cooking with raw unprocessed groceries. There's already a cheaper but not easier alternative. Education is what's needed.
