I see that the very nice Barbury Castle Estate (2000 acres) Near Marlborough Wilts , has supposedly been sold, the asking price was £20 million , wonder who has bought it . Compared to a 750 acre estate Nr Cirencester that is on the market for £17million , it seemed quite good value for money to me if one is fortunate to have those sorts of financial resources to invest in land.

Ballington just up the road from me has just been sold for that sort of money. Not as many acres but a nice pad to live in. If you believed all the rumors many a retired footballer and other assorted wealthy types looked at it. I thought of offering a few quid, didnt like the A36 going through the middle though.

Bought a pair of Massey combines off them many moons ago I think, was the manager called Butcher? Combines were very reliable and went on for years, but the MF 40 that they bought from Pewsey dealer Pococks turned out to be a dog, and eventually helped in Pococks demise.

A good friend went and looked at it, dont know the outcome, not spoken with him but know he had plenty of housing money to roll over.

Barbury Castle, as in Nigel Bunter's place at Sharpridge where Alan King trains racehorses? Used to belong to Count Konrad Goess-Saurau & the Post Office pension fund before that. Chris Musgrave manages it as part of Temple Farming.

Barbury Estate, don't know if Alan King is a tenant or not. Supposedly bought by a non farmer. Was on the market for a whole week.

Oh, and most of the land isn't great, too steep for anything but sheep, hence less ££, though still many more than it's worth.

Which Stratton has bought it? Josh?

My father once told me that Jack Stratton (Josh's great uncle) bought some of their downland for £3 an acre in the thirties, when all it would grow was ragwort and rabbits.

You are both right. I think the original farm is 1 mile x 3 miles. I remember my grandfather saying it was a white elephant when they bought it because of the amount of unproductive land and the number of staff needed to farm it. It's a bit different now.
