Cut another field of Orwell today, looks to be quite a bit more straw and a grain weight of 62.5 kg/hl, averaged just shy of 3t/a

Into the Belfry now, very dry but good specific weight, 68-70!
Struggling to do 7.5t/ha, heads are quite small. Can never seem to get hybrids to deliver!

Last year the winter barley average for the total acreage was 3.3 t/a. That was over a weigh bridge. It won’t be anywhere near that this year though. Spring barley did really well last year at 3.6t/a (we’ve never had spring barley do so well) but will be lucky if it does 2 this year more likely 1.5!

Obviously, this year will be notable for, amongst other things, the large number of breakdowns.

Surprisingly the barley I drilled 4th of may (cuckoo barley!) is look about the best we’ve got! Seems to be hanging on a lot better than the earlier drilling spring barley.

Maybe it is naturally mature, having had everything it needed during its life? Glass half full not half empty!

It’s look better than alot of spring crops round here, even my canary seed is ripening early!
