Barley Lodging

Same here

Last week it looked by far the worst of all our six-rows, having suffered most from the late-lamented drought.

Now it looks the best.

And, thanks to an honourable seed merchant, no 2-row contamination in Funky this year to reduce the specific weight.

I thought it’d be the six row that would reduce the specific weight .

We've started in June two or three times, here.

But not this year.
Is that combining hard grain, or crimping ?
Usually barley is never ready before third week in July here. Often end July early August . Last year was exceptionally early, as we were combining on 5th July .something I’ve never done in over 40 years of combining

Really? From it starting to turn? Mines never been fit before third week of July.

Beware of comparing North Lincs with Devon/Cornwall. When I grew winter barley 15th -20th July was a normal start date but many were going in the last few days of June around here last year.

Hard grain.

Some was cut for crimping, roundabout Cullompton, I think, in the third week of June last year.

Latitude puts us a couple of weeks ahead of North Lincs, but altitude puts us a couple of days behind East Devon.

Can often be two weeks between start of Winter Barley on the north Cornish coast, usually around the Padstow area, and when we get going in the wetter part of SE Cornwall.

That's a massive difference for a relatively short distance. Do they get half your rainfall too?
