Barley or second wheat

I was hoping to get some wheat stubbles re seeded but have abandoned that idea, had thought of putting winter barley in instead but as it’s getting later and wetter, starting to wonder wether a second wheat may be another option. Only grown a second wheat once before and wasn’t over impressed and extra seed dressing costs, but it’s getting late for drilling barley into good conditions. We’ve had a fair bit of rain but nowhere near as much as some just no sign of any decent drying weather. My plan for barley was some straight out of the shed, wheat iid have to order because of the seed dressing’s

Imo , you could toss a coin based on the above. But if you buy seed you are committing ( or committing to a cost ) the barley won’t cost you until the day you drill it .
What does the weather look like in the next couple weeks is the biggest problem

Tricky. Barley will get you straw and land cleared early. But currently it's worth stuff all.
The worth is a bit ummmmm? because I’ll be using it myself, same for the straw. As far getting cleared a bit sooner, that’s definitely a bonus as the grass seed is sitting in the shed.
But the biggest thing for me is what will get me the best crop, limited previous experience would suggest second wheats don’t perform too well at extra expense but we’re unlikely to be drilling barley into dust now, weather going forward a bit of an unknown but no long settled spell on the horizon and a bit late in the year to hope for one

In my opinion 2nd wheat performs about the same as winter barley, however I think its the crop that follows that gets the gain.
Downside is you will have to spray off the wheat stubble to prevent it coming up in the barley or plough it well in . I've sprayed the headlands off the wheat stubble but but not the field as we will be ploughing it .....hopefully this coming week.. to get WB in .

Sorted then. Get the barley if you think you'll get it in in good conditions. Here at least you'd not bank on ground being clear of straw with a decent wheat crop until end of august and I like grass seeds in, rolled and rained on by second week of September (reygrass).
