what rate do folks sow spring barley at generally? It will be for wholecrop one field will be undersown. One field is fairly heavy clay . South west Scotland in the hills

I would go higher given his location/soil type/ usage. 400-450 seeds.

Will ground have dried enough in March for sowing in his location?
I don’t sow until end of April beginning of may asground not dry enough until then also as undersow it with grass. Not sure about the seeds per m2. I’m more of a cwt per acre measurement

Down here it would be 1cwt/ac normally and 3/4 cwt/ac for the undersown. Make sure it goes in well and the ph is right.
Where abouts are u? I was planning on sowing at 1.5cwt acre but perhaps too much. We sowed mulika wheat at just under 2 cwt last year and was undersown with Italian . Was a bumper crop

Good point. I hadn’t taken account of the location. 350 is a South of England seed rate in mid March into a reasonably good seedbed.

At least 200kg/ha. The grass will be absolutely fine! Think how well grass weeds that have been sprayed still survive. You won't smother the sown grass with the barley crop.

You're winding us up ... over 3 cwt an acre .

I’m not. That’s what we’ve done the last few years and it works fine. Yield varies depending on moisture in the spring from 2.5-3.3t/acre. A good average for us is just under 3t/ac from 120kg N and no other nutrients. Had a bit go flat this year after some bad weather in June but other than that it’s stood fine.
