Barley volunteers in wheat

Looks like Topik might be having an effect here but too early to be sure (9 days)

I had Topic applied about 20 days ago to a field of September sown wheat with quite a few spring barley volunteers. Earlier in week it looked to be doing a reasonable job - will get some photos if I can when next on the farm early next week.

I also had a field treated with Hatra + Defy - this is sending the barley light green but barley is very thick.

Did you use Topik at full rate or half rate + oil?
I used the later and can’t see any obvious effects after 3+ weeks).

0.25 lt/ha + 1 lt/ha Cropspray 11E. + Hallmark look alike. My observation was I should have confessed from driving by and nipping into the gateway for a quick look and a pee! When I get to look more thoroughly I may be disappointed. But the barley looked pretty yellow compared to the wheat. As say will take a look next week if get chance.

Frigging barley turns yellow all on its own now for the next 4 months:rolleyes:

Had massive amounts of barley volunteers in some FW about 5 years ago, easily seen in the heap at harvest. £5 / t claim was much cheaper than redrilling or multiple applications of herbicide.

BB

Concurr with your general view BB.

Of the three fields I have treated one is absolutely as thick as cress with barley it is genuinely competing with the wheat. I wait with interest to see how the Hatra fares.

The other two while not as bad have around 50 or so plants metre square barley fairly evenly with some dense old combine trails. They should have received glyphosate just prior to emergence but the farm staff lost faith in me the day I wanted it applied as the odd wheat plant was just showing on a lighter patch of soil. Understandable but a tad irritating. Anyway am looking forward to see how the Topic does

As you say though, usually accepting a small admix claim is best strategy.

If it’s as bad as you say can you not sell straight to a pig farmer to mill himself. How many ha are you talking about?
