Just taken some ground that’s been drilled to westawolds grass. Nice covering off grass even more barley volunteers. Is there enough feed value to February lambers that will be supplemented cake from Christmas and then straight in yards from middle of jan?
Yes, will be good stuff and will help the grass if you graze out the barley. Just avoid poaching the ground as it's so wet at the moment. Some years barley volunteers go all yellow with disease and I'm sure this decreases its value but this year volunteers have grown like crazy around us.
I’ve got some CSFB written off Rape that has got a reasonable amount of volunteer Barley swamping out what Rape there is left.
Fortunately, its only had one spray of insecticide so doesn’t owe us a lot.
But for the fact that it is Hybrid barley, I’d be tempted to spray the Rape out and leave the Barley as a crop!
Anybody ever tried this?
Nothing is going to happen with the field until the ground dries and there is a fair lot of BG, which would be difficult to control in Barley now, to say the least!
But back in the early days of growing rape in the early 80’s my neighbour often faced the choice as to which crop to spray out in the autumn, the rape or the barley.
We did have IPU in those days!
