Basic chemical store

We grow approx 170 acres on the farm and for many years have been reliant on a contractor doing the spraying. The contractor also stored the chemicals for us.

We are going to take the spraying in house but we need to set up a legitimate chemical store. Due to our smallish scale we want to look at the most economical options possible. We have a store room in a machinery shed which can be padlocked. Have any of you any cheap and cheerful set ups? Chest freezer(s) is an option but would probably prefer some sort of bunded shelves where everything is easy to see and organise. Open to ideas. Thanks.

We have bought second hand fridge containers which had been used for supermarket delivery vans. A simple bund and its all sorted, (i was even told if it were tipped so any liquid ran to the back that would be sufficient as a way of containing spills) we’ve done a few now for ourselves and others. Works out pretty cheap and they are already easy to access, lockable, insulated and big enough to store plenty. You can pick them up on ebay for a couple of hundred quid.

How big is the store room? Is it possible to insulate it to protect from frost? Or do you even carry much stock over winter?

It's fairly easy/cheap to build a small store (even within that store?) out of plywood and 2x2 timber. Stick a chest freezer in it if you want a small amount of frost proof storage, or insulate inside of timber construction.
On a small acreage I only have limited chems on site at any one time, so stack in (sound) water troughs which would contain any spillage. For a bigger quantity, you could do the same by stacking in IBC liners cut in half perhaps?

There is plenty of room in the store so anything is possible but at the same time would like to keep it as neat as possible. I like shelves because it keeps everything at eye level and takes up less space.

I'll have a hoke about to see if I can find anything that would be appropriate for a bunded sump and maybe put some racking on top it. I do have a few IBCs knocking around but if the bund needs to be fireproof that's maybe out the window, but at the same time we buy cubes of engine oil. Surely if its good for oil its good for chemicals??

I'm not too concerned about frost. We're below sea level and hard frost is an extremely rare occurance.

Needs to be lockable and secure and don't use wood/timber or the like for shelves etc as you aren't supposed to have anything in there that will aid a fire.

There are various designs available from companies making them, just don't buy one made out of plastic. A smallish store should be suitable for 170 acres.

Ours is bunded, bricked, metal shelving, lockable. Unfortunately sandwiched between a feed shed and oil shed 😬😬.
Got away with up to now, but I reckon RT man will pull us up on it next month 🙄

Flat pack so shipping should be reasonable. Making some amends for the puchase price.

Mine just needed a warning sticker to keep red tractor happy.
I added two bunded shelves.

Slug pellets etc need to be in their own bund inside so they cant fall into main bund, strange but true

Not fire rated though.
Thought they had to be for pesticides.

I don't think there are any hard and fast standards for chemical stores- it is all guidance. If it is all metal and contains nothing else but the chemicals and their cans, you've done all you can really. There should always been a vent in a store somewhere so there is minimal explosion risk- any overpressure should escape out of the vent.
