Think even the dealers have trouble finding the firmware! But you are probably right about their reasoning? They want you to pay the dealer to do it

Fair point..........but I think manuals/instruction videos should be freely available. Having talked to couple of CNH dealers recently they dont really want to firmware update gps . They would much prefer us do it ourselves. Maybe have a dealer controlled rollback system for problem updates which would be charged for...........or maybe not........I'm hutting my head?Firmware updates don't always go smoothly, at least if the dealer does it they get to sort out any issues.

Similar here but dealer supplied update but turned out to be a version I could not update to (veeerry long story - fixed with lot of help from tff). A lot of wasted time/hassle/phone calls that could have been avoided if the files were just left online. (like greenfields site in US which is my go to place now)Perhaps the dealer usually does it right but not always. I had my screen and receiver updated at the dealer because I could not get hold of the update files even if a factory support guy promised to share the files (promised at the time of purchase). I got the correct SW info from this forum but the dealer screw it up badly on the first attempt. The next update was successful but still not the correct release.
If the SW update had been available from the manufacturer's support site, I'm pretty sure the customer would have been happy, the dealer organization would not need to have been involved at all (now they had to send a couple of guys to assist their service guys). I would have saved hours and fuel from unnecessary driving to the workshop.
What if the SW update fails when the customer attempts to do it himself/herself? It would likely have been the same for the dealer, don't they follow the same accurate instructions as the customer? In any case, should not be too different for an experienced dealer to take care of the update then (irrespectively if the customer first tried and failed).
Trimble at least seems to be one of the fair brands, offering SW updates even if it might be difficult to find the files.
