Hi All

I have just been enrolled on the the BASIS Crop Protection course at Harper Adams next January (2020). i was looking at getting a head start plus some over winter studying on my project. Has anyone got any ideas/things to do and not to do?

Your help will be much appreciated.

Just do chemical stores. It will be the hardest part to learn/remember as it is quite dull so a refresher prior to your exams will be very useful.

I may know someone who has done the exam and a similar BASIS project before....

Remember it will be the dead of winter so clever crop trials, weeds or herbicide assays may be quite a challenge unless you have access to a heated greenhouse or plant lab.

Keep it simple. Just read The requirements of what the project needs and follow those. I know so many people who have spent a ludicrous amount of time on the project and not the important stuff. You would have to do something pretty catastrophic to fail the project but it’s easy to fail the rest of the qualification.

As above, avoid something time and growing season dependent like cover cop trials. I did spray application with the old angled but fine Hawk nozzles (now Defy nozzles) vs flat fans on Atlantis in March. I had another 8 weeks before the deadline, so had time to measure the % of control.

Sounds like the project won't have to be in until the end of summer?

I left my application so late I missed the growing season so did a survey based project which to my surprise was accepted.

How about, compare approved adjuvants for generic glyphosate. Or survey weed seeds in say combines or uncleaned machinery by sowing gunk and seeing what comes up using say cold treatments, drying periods and warm/cold to investigate seed dormancy, maybe counting seeds to get an idea of germinability and cost effectiveness of sanitary procedures, Investigate cutting heads off tall weeds that stick out above crop to see how much this reduces seed returns - as those weed surfing machines do, at various times of seed maturity. Can you tell I like weeds? Anyway choose something that you find interesting.

Best preparatory work I did was to read and reread the CRD website - everything you need to use pesticides lawfully is there. The certificate is after all to show you are a safe practitioner.

Good luck.

i did a simple wheat herbicide trial, untreated, 3 different herbicides applied pre-em or peri-em. might be worth looking at something similar now we have lost deter. can you delay the pre-em to peri-em and add an aphicide? do you loose herbicide efficiency.

Pick something you are interested in, it’s much easier. I have just completed the course at harper, they will ask you about potential project ideas in your first week of the course so they will tell you if you are on the money or not.

As a sprayer operator I wanted to do something applicable to my job so I compared nozzles on fungicide application.

Mine was on the spray store and all the legislation made the exam much easier as you always get it. Get yourself some NIAB strategy’s as most of the crops are in them and gives all you need. Only leaves a few minor crops and potatoes to learn. It’s a lot to get through the earlier you can going the better.

Good luck

I did mine on vibrance Duo in comparison to SPD and competitor growth promoters, as above doing a simple project well is much better than trying to do something too complicated. An interesting one for your area would be the new BYDV resistant wheat variety from RAGT but you might struggle to get the results in time for the deadline in May or whenever it is. You really need something that’s measureable in the autumn/ winter so you have plenty of time to write it up.

I did my project last year on the use of foliar feeds and good crop nutrition in place of fungicides in OSR. I wanted to do it for wheat because of the impending loss of CTL and the big question mark hanging over several of the azole family but because of the limited time frame of my course I could only do it on autumn diseases in osr.

My course started in the autumn and the project had to be submitted by the 20th December which didnt give us much time to get any meaningful results but it still passed we just had to show results for what we observed upto that point.

If your course is over a long time frame then it should be easier to follow trails right through to harvest.

Just remember black grass, nozzles and water rates are done to death in projects. Reaching for the chemical can should always be the last resort and think outside the box a bit and do a project on a subject that interests you personally as itll be much easier to do then.

Ps. I was daunted by the thought of having to write a minimum of 3000 words, but in the end once I got into it I struggled to get it under the max of 5000!!!!

Correlation, perhaps negative, between cock and combine size?

Turned up collar and idiot number plates - do they increase silage carting speed? #thelegend.

I wrote a three thousand words in ten hours today. Proper words too.

Tom - keep it simple. You are not trying to write an agriculture changing work of art but a project you can complete! I struggled to get started but once you get an idea you will probably need to simplify it as 3000 words is quite tight! I did mine on angled nozzles and water rates to assess coverage. Not ground shattering but what was needed to pass. Tim
