Battery puzzle

If I’m reading it correctly you are still not eliminating the earth lead connection to tractor chassi. Where it bolts to the tractor. That’s where the jumplead from a bolt head to the connected battery comes in.
I agree. I've had this on behaviour on two older tractors- every time it's a corroded cable, usually the earth connection to the chassis. If your new battery starts "playing up" in a couple of months, check the cables/connections first. A new battery may have enough "oomph" to get through old weary cables for a while.

I'd bet your old battery will start the tractor if you wire it (with jumpers) directly to the starter, bypassing the existing cables :)

We have a old 1056 that wont start off the key. Turn the key and the starter clicks but wont spin it over.

It gives the impression the battery is flat or knackered but if you cross the starter it starts up instantly everytime.

Might be worth a try crossing the starter. Before you buy a new battery

Hi Qman,

As I said in my post of 10.22 yesterday, they didn't offer me any other make in that spec. It was an Exide originally fitted,, and the Amps of new battery slightly higher than 9 year old batt. Also 4 year guarantee seems OK.

Dirty connections in loom between starter and ignition switch. Either trace the wires and clean every plug and pin or fit a 4 pin aytomotive relay on the bulkhead and use the existing starter cabke from ignition switch to energise the relay

Hi MH,

Yes, I confirmed that the tractor leads and connections were OK by disconnecting the suspect battery and connecting jump leads to the tractor lead terminals, and this gave sure fire starter operation.

As I have posted, I have now got and fitted a new battery, all is fine. So it seems that despite the voltage reading of the suspect battery, it was just not capable of spinning the starter

I am curious as to your whereabouts, I like to have a mental image of the location of people with whom I am in contact. First two letters of postcode will suffice if your wary. or P.M.

Off load terminal voltage of a battery doesn't tell you much, hence the need for a dummy load, this is particularly applicable when using a digital voltmeter that puts a negligible load on a battery. A moving coil voltmeter is better for testing those aaa and aa batteries.
