it's got to be easier, and cheaper to export carcasses, but, the mkt want's them live, if we ban exports, it will knock prices, but, it should be policed properly, if it is going to continue, just need 'them' to get onto the halal killing.

Not just method of slaughter, but many consumers in destination countries do not have access to refrigeration.

Does their poverty mean they should be denied access to fresh meat?

I'll stick my neck out.

I agree with live export. I think the UK should be doing more of it. Limiting markets in a post Brexit world is madness.

This is the perfect opportunity for AHDB/International Aid program to fund UK spec abattoirs in partner countries. Imagine the value which could be added to "grass rat" dairy cull calves?

Before everyone gets too hung up on this, questions should be asked as to the validity of the footage and whether the UK ear tags were actually in the animals or just shown in pictures as having been from the animals being filmed.

This doesn't make sense in that the calves that have been sent to Spain from Scotland have been the type of animal which would have gone into Veal units and are not feedlot type cattle which would have ended up in the Middle East.
I am not saying it couldn't happen but these animal rights organisations are not averse to doctoring pictures and information to achieve maximum effect.

The trouble is once we have exported them we have no control over the onward chain. In fact once they are on the boat we have no control, the amount of sheep that die on these boats is awful and a uk farmer would be locked up if they died while being transported on uk roads.

How many sheep die on these boats?

this is what i don't 'get', the value of all sheep, has got to be near record prices, surely they cant afford to let to many die, or even go backwards, people just don't throw that sort of money away, or, is the profit so large, they can afford to lose some ? There will always be 'rogue traders', that will always occur anywhere, and unstoppable, but i have a sneaky feeling, a lot of doctored video's, out there, appearing to make it look the norm.

Worth pointing out that the vast majority of UK halal killing is humane, with pre-stunning. That’s not the same for kosher, which is never pre-stunned, to my knowledge.
Happy to support a campaign to stop non stun slaughter, but that should be done with care and precise wording, and not alienate any particular religious groupings. Most Muslims are happy with stunned slaughter, and the industry needs their support.

it would be difficult for our politicians to stand up to halal without also standing up to kosher
I'm glad someone has mentioned this!! 80% of Halal meat is pre stunned. It's all down too how the holy bloke they have reads the text in the Quran.
Whereas Kosher is 100% NON STUNNED! I have this argument regularly with people. Our local abattoir is a halal unit, but everything there is stunned. I have no issue sending stock there or having it back for home consumption
