Over 300 died in the Fifties in - I think - Jaywick area. So I can understand why folks are cautious. Centred on Ipswich as a control centre there were a lot of agencies and services on standby .

I think it's easy to knock them but if the wind hadn't changed there could have been a different outcome especially with so many residents reticent in leaving their homes

34 died in Jaywick in 1953.

i appreciate there are lives at stake here and the authorities need to be cautious. But the problem is people are getting used to ignoring the warnings because they prove wrong.

The red alert forecasts for the last two tides proved very wrong as the sea didn't get within 1.5 metres of the forecast. If they evacuate Jaywick every time there is a 4.8m tide then they will be doing it every month.

One day the sea will come over and people will drown partly because they didn't listen to the authorities and partly because they didn't trust the authorities because of a poor track record.

According to Wikipedia 307 died in 53 floods in Lincs, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.
Thought I'd heard the 300 figure on a news item this week.

Surely the sea defences have improved greatly since `53? Canvey was pretty much swamped but there have been many improvements since then.
I used to live in Brightlingsea and the odd high tide certainly made it into the lower roads in the Old Town but never anything too drastic. Glad its all OK for the folk along the coast but I`ll stick with not shedding a tear for Jaywick. :)
