Next week every man and his dog will be at Exeter trying to steal them...I would have kept it to myself..not flaught it...if the sellers seen this he will be totally pee'd off...some folk

I just happened to be there at the right time I guess. Not flaunting it, just saying how it was and backing it up with pics of stock in question.

That’s what this thread is about surely?

Seller could always put a reserve on and by the feel if the lambs they weren’t hungry so could have run on possibly at home.

I had some spare time on thursday afternoon looking after little miss so took her to bala to see some lambs instead of our usual trip to rurhin to see some cattle  id forgotten how small the place is. There wasnt many there maybe 2 full rows of lambs. Didnt stay for the sale but what was there was suprisingly good quality mostly terminal crosses albeit a bit light doubt any were over 40kg and bone woykd have graded dead over a 2 so stores really. Probably too early for many welsh ram lambs yet thats what i remember seeing there most. I doubt we will go back there for a nose again

You surprise me! Going from the prices you see reported there I was expecting nearly all of them to be Welsh lambs! 2 local farmers still sell there I think

I havent seen the report for this week but i wouldnt expect them to sell very well. I saw some very nice texel cross store lambs make about £35 £40 a couple of weeks ago. Still early enough for lots of welsh lambs id think?

Yes, sorry, in previous years I meant, I haven't looked at their reports for this year.

Store cattle,

A very small entry penned when over half the entry were NON FA sold as expected to a much more difficult trade thou given the current situation cattle were selling much better than possible could be the case, good strong 550/600 kilo Fri steers up/down £800 head, dairy bred R/U grade strong BBx feeding steers around the 500/550 kilo weight around £835 head, heifers of the same comments would be £30/40 behind, would take a hell of an animal to clear £1100 head, all in all trade down on the week by about £40 head.

Price of note: 28 month old Fri steers at £140 head.

Stirks,

Yet again a very small entry penned with prices back £30/40 head on last week with good R/U grade 10 month old steers around the £625/75 mark, Stirks looked very well sold compared to older cattle in the store ring.

Store lambs,

A slightly larger entry which can overall only be described as one of the worst entry's quality wise I have ever seen at a market with the effects of the grass shortage clearly seen with a lot of pens of lambs being very small. The best lambs would be back a few £ss on last week selling between £55 and £73 head in the main, plenty of smaller lambs between £30/45 head, trade would be back some £25 head on 12 months ago thou it could get much worse yet.

No doubt about it that many of these lambs need hard feed until the rain season comes back and grass starts growing again.

Hopefully neither will get down to that level yet but there is a long way to go yet this summer and anything could happen.

Certainly the worst store lamb trade yesterday that I can recall since at least 2001.

Good lambs ( like cattle ) will always sell well on the trade.

If your looking to sell store cattle/ lambs in the next few months you really need to get them on hard feed asap and keep them growing, I would say many grass cattle around here are going backwards now.

Yes this drought is getting to the crunch now I think,we had 16mm rain on Friday night, been hot yesterday and today so that will do no good at all,its the heat that is doing the damage and the forecast is for a hot week to come.Lambs particularly seem to be losing condition, cattle are still looking well and full, whether they are gaining weight is another matter.Neighbour is putting rams in with his flock of Jan lambers this week, cant see them going on very quick with nowt to eat.

Had our lambs in to weigh after selling two weeks ago on Friday, had left 2 lambs behind as they were tagged and were hiding in the nettles. Draw at 46kg so thats what they were, weighed 43.5kg on Friday and rest were drying up. Pulled anything over 36kg into feed and shut in shed on adlib hay and quality adlib pellet that does not bloat and cleaned tanks out . Happy as Larry now they were just not doing on the dry grass. As long as theres plenty of clean water and good feed we will have a couple of boxes fit in 10 days-- never shut sheep in before in Summer.

I did exactly the same here when we weaned last week. Any lambs over 35kg got shut in the shed on adlib consisting of crushed barley, crushed peas, soya and molasses using up crops in store and bedded on rape straw. They seem to have settled really well and are much cooler in a big airy cattle shed than in some of the shadeless burnt up fields we have to offer them at the moment. Time will tell if we have done the right thing.
Lambs under 35kg were weaned and shut in small paddocks with access to the same adlib creep. If it hasn't rained in a month I will bring them in as well.
Hopefully the fat lamb trade will improve by the time they are ready?
Maybe I ought to buy some of these cheap store lambs and do the same with them if I was a gambling man.

Did shut 1500 stores lambs gradually from middle of Feb as they had had such a bad wet winter, cost 12k extra plus work in feed but they were fit in 3 weeks at the big price due to lack of meat on the market. Got to bite the bullet but came out on top. Lambs will alter on the best feed its always the most expensive on the list but thats for a reason so hence its the cheapest when you get them fat and gone.

Exeter seems quiet for lamb this morning. I’ve just one pen of 44kg in.

I think they would of made more dead weight

Possibly, but to take dead its a bit of a drag for me, and Extere is just 5 mins away, so cheap to run them in.

Just think Exeter runs short of buyers at times, and they are best mates.

Pity as they were smart lambs with plenty of finish on them.
