Interesting chat today with a good friend of mine who is a buyer / worker for an abattoir,
there is just to much cull cow / out of spec meat in the system at the moment , so all the meat pie factories etc have enough cheap meat without touching the prime market , Their delivery lorry was behind a polish and romanian truck also full of cull cow meat , He said combination of shortage of fodder , high concentrate and straw prices mean all the dairy boys right across europe are killing anything that looks at them funny , and will keep on going till they get to a core of good stock , which wont be till spring , There is still brighter outlook for lamb as ethnic trade need sheep meat , but once again over supply is the problem , along with out of spec lamb mixed in with prime in some cases and sold as one lot in some centres as @Jerry was saying . At least with dead weight they know what they are getting through day to day , So come on some of you lads dont just dump unfit lambs on fat market day , Learn how to grade them and put them in the store sale if not fit
Makes you wonder what cull price will be like when the numbers dry up, trade at the moment is very poor but it hasnt collapsed entirely which shows there is a massive demand for cow beef.

he did say though he didnt think it would dry up at least till turnout next spring , dairys are culling harder , anything with a limp / poor eaters , awkward milkers , there is still plenty out there across europe .
problem is hugely inflated cost to carry through winter , but no rise in output price of milk , maybe drought and high cereal cost will be a blessing in 18 months time , The scandinavian drought has caused massive problems , and winter looming , i think a lot thought it might come allright , but too late now

thats good price for stores jerry , best gone before winter kicks in proper , mind you the forage rape around here is growing like hell recon it grew 5 or 6 in last couple weeks , can see store price holding up for a bit yet

I was in the 3rd run of pens so near the start of the day, prices seemed to firm a little as things went on. I had to nip and do something mid sale which meant I missed out on a couple of pens I was interested in buying, I will try and pop in on Monday to see if bargains to be had out of the prime lambs

Ive got enough rape/vetch/stubble turnips to carry another 100 lambs through to March I think so want some longer keep sorts ideally.

Fattening units are complaining of being full up with cows waiting for the price to improve. These cows will have to go by january or they will eat the profit.

The store lambs would likely make more in the stores than the fat anyway.

Are the cheapest store lambs bought in the prime ring?

I tried two pens in Exeter today as stores, one pen suffolk cross, the other mixed pure lleyn and texel cross.

Average weights were about 43 to 44kg but not the best finished. Some of the pure lleyn whether lambs would have taken a good drop of feed to get them where I would like to be honest.

Pens averaged £70 a head so not bad vs fat lambs and no levy to pay.

On Monday's prime trade they would have made about £66/68 head..........

Clean cattle have been up in most markets this week so someone wants them!

Are a lot of clean cattle bought for further finishing...I know a lot from Sedge go for further finishing..false price really

Some will be no doubt but yet again its the same old problem of people putting under finished cattle thru the prime ring just like they are doing with lambs.

Short notice on farm dispersal sale of several hundred ewes and 500 store lambs on the 21st of November near Minehead (GTH/ EXMOOR FARMERS ) might intrest you cattleman.
