Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

He will have taken some big chances over the years. These folk all have a place and really would be bad to do without. They help us market lambs fairly constantly although it might not feel that way

Wouldn’t surprise me if skelly has a lot sitting about, bought at the bottom that he’ll be cashing in on now.
You mean Robert Skelton here? Unless you know them personally,no one knows how they really operate. They certainly will not tell you! From what i am led to believe, they keep them the absolute minimum time they can get away with, and would rather get any margin but on huge number throughput.

A lot of confusion in markets at the moment, not sure why there are so many mixed messages.

Clean cattle in the markets seem to be increasing in price, although I guess there are a few Shows now coming in. However deadweight cattle prices are falling with various reasons being given. The most valid is the very high numbers of cows being killed with dealers/feeders and some farms stacked out with them.

Sheep deadweight seeing very small increases but the market prices have been very static with only the very best export quality increasing in price per kg and the Heavy (out of spec) lambs being a good price. Hopefully lambs have turned the corner and we will see an improvement up to Xmas.

Ewes though are definitely in the doldrums, yesterday in Ashford the ewes were the lowest price I have seen for many years. The buyers all complaining that demand is low and numbers of ewes being sold very high. Even the best meat sheep were struggling to get to £60.00 and these would be weighing 65kg plus. Low cull ewe prices will not help confidence in the sheep industry going forward and it seems there are plenty more ewes still to be sold.
With a weak pound at the moment the trade gives little confidence going forward. Store lambs will need to increase in price considerably to show a profit and only store cattle have seen a correction to cover higher feed costs.

I wondered whether, following a moderate trade for breeding sheep, the bottom end of them had/would be diverted into the food chain resulting in lower prices for culls. But that doesn't explain the reduced demand for the product, which I would have thought would remain fairly steady?
Doesn't make me regret my decision to put a good cull ewe in the freezer: burgers from the fore, diced leg for curry and massive loin chops!

Deffinetly numbers on the cattle side I think. I had some booked into Dunbia for tomorrow. Agent rang today, saying they had too many and trying to pull numbers back. Thankfully I was watching the wagon drive away with them as we spoke. Talking to another driver for tomorrow’s ABP consignment. He had taken cattle into sawley yesterday about 2 in the afternoon and said the spot was awash with cattle. Lairige full to bursting.

Are yes, but you are a good regular supplier of his with the type of cattle he wants. Last time I slipped a hereford -O4H (off grass) in a batch (good few years ago when I didn’t understand what they wanted). He spat his dummy out and refused to take my cattle the next time. Even though at the time, it was worth more on their grid than anywhere else I was sending cattle.

Not implying a weighting list for Dunbia. But they obviously are not struggling to get the cattle
