I was at St Boswell's to sell ewes today and watched most of the Hoggs sold. Most in-spec sheep in the £1.90-£2 bracket, took a good Hogg to make more than that. Bigger hoggs mainly £1.70s.

Ewes were a good trade, weren't many in. My Easycares were mid £60s (one corker at £35). Mule £70s, most Texel types £80s. Dearest sheep sold (for what it was) was a extreme Beltex ewe for £123.

Interestingly, Radio France were there and recorded an interview with Scott Donaldson and a couple of farmers.
What was Donaldson telling Radio France?

I suspect those £140 ewes will be 120kg terminal sire bred sheep, as those market toppers usually are, so double the weight of even the biggest hoggs.;)
What’s the ko% though?
Different spec
Splitting costs?
Makes no sense they are cutting off their noses to spite their faces

Those (very few) ‘best’ ewes will likely kill out as well as any Hogg. It still takes a decent terminal x ewe to clear £100, and those will be leaving a far heavier carcass than any Hogg too.
Ewes are still cheap meat compared to a Hogg at £85-90.

My point is that if heavy hoggs are potentially worth more in the cull ewe ring something is very wrong

they are all to cheap when you consider the extra costs we have incurred for feeds since this time last year what with beasty and drought , bloody chip shops are quick to put on an extra when there is a shortage , ours whacked 60p on cod and 25p on chips cos spuds are more expensive this year , never to come back down
