Yes I am fully aware of that....the damage is done as soon as they are unloaded....so how does that punish the vendors..hit them in the pocket....Its the Auctioneers mart and they have the power to do just that...if they go in the loading bay pen...they will infect most passing through it..TRUE/OR False..pen them and hit them in the pocket

3,377 store lambs penned today at Sedge @Shebb90, biggest entry for some months!

Trade would be back £3/4 on the week but short keep lamb's ( ie 6/8 weeks ) looked hellish dear trading around the £58/61 mark, top price was £74 head.

On the scab issue @cattleman123 , its illegal to move sheep with the scab mite so they should not be allowed to be unloaded at the market and if they are they and then scab is detected they should be sent home unsold!

As for Trading standards, they are more intrested in the paperwork and not the condition of animals at the markets!

But you are aware @cattleman123 that the scab mite can jump onto your clothes and then jump onto your sheep back at home if you have been anywhere near livestock lorry's/ the sheep/ other people etc at the market??
Sales I been to lately short keep lambs late 60's.

You will hit them more in the pocket if you send the whole pen home! a fine of say £5 head is worthless, will cost more than that to take them home and treat/ feed them and then haul them back to the market when they are healthy so vendors will just pay the £5 and not worry about it!

As long as they allow scab infested sheep to be sold at the market people will carry on bringing infected sheep to the market!

Please read my original post again...and think about it before replying

I have read your post, putting a fine of say £5 on a lamb with scab is a waste of time and wont stop sheep with scab coming into the market.

As for losing customers due to scab, plenty of people were keen to buy today even thou the knew they may buy in scab!

Wouldn’t mind a blue x lim bull myself
Yes I’ve been thinking about going that way myself. Spent 12.5k on bulls in the last few years when a lot of folks reckon crossed bulls would have been much less

we have a couple of crossbreds, very happy with them.

I totally agree something needs to be done to stop all these sheep getting sold when they are infected with the scab mites but the only way that will happen regardless of how you do it is if the auctioneers are pro-active and take the lead on the issue.

To be fair, I took @cattleman123 as saying they should be hit with the fine on top of taking them home. If its just take them home you'll always get people chancing it

Under what law can the auctineers fine them for bringing scab infected sheep to market?

I know they can't, I'm not disagreeing with you. But as it stands, there is no penalty for a criminal offence of moving scab infected sheep. Either the auctioneers need to ensure the inspectors are doing their job or do something themselves.

Just look at how many people have said they won't risk buying from that market, or selling breeding stock because they can't risk bringing them home. I don't know the answer, but they manage to come up with enough other spurious deductions
