No idea why farmers are surprised about prices rising? We have been shafted all year due to the Brexit dates being changed and the bad press created by the anti meat lobby.

Christmas and a confirmed delay with Brexit have increased confidence in the job so prices are bound to rise, if I am honest the prices are still too low when you take into account the effort and investment involved.

like your gist but i think you're wrong on brexit....the uncertainty has hit sterling and has been worth 60p/kg dwt i reckon

i know nowt but i'll stick my neck out :D....£4-50 by end of nov....£4-75 by election.......tory majority + cake bags open now and back to £4 ...even £3-80 by new year....then slight increase again,,,,prices are kg/dwt.....i'll be delighted to be wrong about second part of my prediction though

January and February haven’t been exciting for hoggs over the last few years. I always reckon it’s the skint time after Christmas that’s the problem. Too much slapped on credit cards

He’s been saying they are too bloody dear for the last 3 years!!!
Been saying the price needs to be sustainable for farmers and butchers, low prices impact upon long term production. However, when prices rise too high for a few weeks it negatively impacts upon the smaller wholesalers who can't take the hit and close down, leaving farmers with less bidders around the mart ring in the long term.

Around £4 should be the minimum to make the job sustainable for lamb in the long term.

As a butcher said to me when he bought some dear hoggs off me and I made a comment about them being a good trade...he said
“There are 52 weeks in a year.”

They may pay too much for them for a month but they get them cheap for the other 11!

Just been looking in Sainsbury's, quite a bit of lamb in, very little beef.

Some poxy little joints with no day, that say serves 4-6. I wonder if the levy should just be pushing people to eat in restaurants, the ones that could be pushed probably won't be able to cook it, so spend a fair bit of money on a joint that doesn't taste great then puts them off for a long time.

The counter had scotch beef and Welsh lamb which pisses me off. A pub down the road only sells scotch steaks, some gimmick that is.

Some stock that was meant to be coming to market was still stuck on the motorway at 2 pm! apparently the long closure was made a lot worse due to the police playing with their new toy ( ie a drone to take evidence of the crash sight )

Plenty of buyers missing in all rings.

Ring that took the biggest hit was the store ring which would be anything from £50- £100 head down on the week, good stuff sold well, anything else very difficult, trade got really bad for the last 100 head or so! plenty of 500 kilo feeding heifers up/down £650 head.

Stirks however were a mental trade, especially for the suckler bred types which the trade for would be the dearest since at least last spring, top was £1000 head for a 9/10 month old steer ( sold subject ) plenty of 250 kilo suckler steers £800+ head and heifers same comments late £600's head, these cattle would be up £200 head on three weeks ago.

Store lambs, from what people were saying they were up £5/7 head on the week, ( thou less buyers due to the above sad road accident )

If that was true why are we losing all the small abattoirs?, why are another 2 abattoirs in Yorkshire closing? There are hardly any small wholesalers left around the Mart rings.

Get yourself into butchering, let us know how you get on in 11 months please ;)

We watch some stores sold some stirks sold some dairy cows and calves sold and the fodder/straw sold
I thought the whole bloody lot was pretty uninspiring from a sellers point of view
