What’s driving the lamb trade, January is usually a tricky month but prices are rising weekly. One wonders if the peak price will come earlier this year with the delay in NZ and Aus lamb hitting the shelves ?

No idea - I've given up trying to guess what's going to happen.

Had £96 for 40kg lambs this week, so what we've got left are off ASAP. They need selling at that, IMHO. Holding them, hoping for it to go up more could be false economy. They're only eating stuff that the ewes could have.

If it keeps going up, then good luck to those who've hung on - could be tempted to draw on the ewe lambs if it does

Drawing ewe lambs is not a good idea your need them to produce for you in the years ahead

I think more people are eating lamb because beef is getting such bad press

Definitely draw ewe lambs with everything that is going on at the moment. Removing poor quality ewe lambs is a no brainer when they make loads of money especially if they were bought in. Maybe not so sensible if they are home bred but even then it is a good opportunity to get rid of those you don't want.
If you feel guilty about selling potential breeding stock then pen them separately in the market and tell them what they are.

I remember many years ago seeing ewe lambs that were good meat put in the stores and they averaged over £100 and all were killed and in the Autumn the same sheep were only £80!!!
After all with these higher prices what a great opportunity for there to be tariffs on lamb after 1/1/21 in a trade deal!!
