Er, don’t WE employ the auctioneers to act on OUR behalf? I thought that’s what they were drawing a healthy commission for....
Yes but auctioneers no that prices have to be sustainable for the whole chain to be able to work. None of them wanted the trade to crash but what goes up must come down. Price adjustment, the shut down in france and closures here was a perfect storm , prices will recover if farmers dont panic. The main sheep men even new record prices every week couldnt last.

Company's can only claim the 80% if they fully shut down..

And it should be pointed out that no company's can yet even claim let alone pay the 80% wage cover, will be at least end of April into May before they will be able to do that!
Try milk....hours not days !

No one wants to see prices sky rocket no more than they want them to fall off a cliff.

Feed the nation yes, give it away very much less keen!
the sh!t will hit the fan over this 80% wages paid
It’s not quite as straightforward
There are several ways to calculate your average also I’m sure accounts email said it’s gross so tax ni pension contribution all to come off

The ongoing dw lw debate. A falling trade in lw resulting in buyers standing off bidding against each other just reminded me that around 25 years ago went to normandy. Ex villager moved there and he had a few sheep off us each year, and ended up mayor of his town. But he took us to a livestock market, it was a slaughter day sale, then all around ring and stands they had a key pad to bid so only auctioneer knew bid and price, and yes obviously auctioneer announced price to keep bidding, but sure @Clive will agree, a keypad that only requires a +1 or 2 option linked to auctioneers screen would be minimal set up and cost and retain anonyminity. Also there for store buying. Would make auctioneers life a lot easier, where they have to treat buyers well for fear of losing them and then lose a load of vendors, despite vendors saying they should toughen up and ignore them, then leave market when they have lost that buyer!! Store sales has attraction from people not bidding as they know mr x is always cash rich so no point bidding against him, or no point bidding against neighbour as he can have this lot then i will have next. Such a simple system and saw this as said 25 years ago when mobile phones were barely known!!

Your auctioneer is talking rubbish and is creating unnecassary suspicions and hatred between farmers and meat wholesalers;

1) Abattoir staff are failing to turn up or are refusing to work, if the abattoir closes they will still receive 80% of their income, so why should they put their families at risk? Therefore abattoirs are struggling to keep lines going.

2) To confirm this point all members of staff walked out of a poultry plant in Ireland today.

3) Would the auctioneer use his personal money to purchase £250,000 worth of lamb and fill a chiller for export, knowing full well the government may introduce further restrictions on movement overnight?

4) Abattoirs already have chillers full of lamb and ewes which were purchased at peak prices last week, which they are struggling to sell without taking a big hit.

Tell your auctioneer to concentrate on his own job as a few meat companies will be going bump soon and may take his mart with them. However, if he feels that the meat trade is lucrative maybe his mart should purchase an abattoir and show the rest how it is done. A few marts have done this in the past and we all know how it ended.
@Smith31 ....unfortunately you are wrong ....and what the auctioneer said was right . The attitude of the big abattoir was exactly what the previous post quoted ...." this is our chance to kill off the meat trade in the livestock market " this was said at a meeting last Fri morning .

Meanwhile Hfd are going to have a store cattle sale on Thurs next . It will be operating under difficult rules but I sincerely hope all will stick to these else I fear it will be stopped . I'm not sure I agree with the 'no breeding stock' rule but still happy to see the market going on .

Take away that stupid 6 day rule and give people the choice on how to sell and the auctions would get far more trade, one holding number and it's either buy or sell, restraint of trade in any other industry, probably ours too if anybody wanted to challenge it.
6 day rule cannot disappear unless all cattle dealers are either more heavily regulated or removed from the system completely.

I still buy my rams in france like that with a key pad ,auctioneer has 3 green lights and a red one ,(yours is lit when you are high bidder) every time a bid is received green lights return to zero then timer gradually lights next one until red light is on , and winner is announced its actually a very good system , and works .

Can some one tell me where these honest Auctioneers are?
I get quite surprised by this thread , there must be alot of farmers with their eyes closed at market not to see bidders rings.
@Smith31 was stating what he thinks , I think he has a few valid points.
When I first started buying calves a dealer threatened to break my legs..nice (y)

As in ALL industries there are good and bad but on the whole the Auctioneers are supplying a very much needed market place for our livestock . The LAA are working unbelievably hard on our behalf ,much of which most will never know about but will be glad they did !

Anyone got any store cattle prices from yesterday ?
Carlisle was shut.

Markets are not for the faint of heart. Watch the sheep being sold in welshpool to be left in no doubt the auctioneer is in charge. Auctions are still the best way of realising what your stock is worth. Calf dealers enjoy running up a new buyer, you just need to learn the game and run them abit.
