I never said everyone one would be eating steak....plenty will be tho
Read the posts in context then. I was replying to the chap who said because folks were sitting at home on 80% of their wages, with no costs from going to work, they’d all be affording to eat steak. I just pointed out that many weren’t in that position and even if they were, it wasn’t a walk in the park. Then you jumped in for some reason .

Yes Carmarthen is still going and the closure of the other three could be a well needed blessing for them.

I don't know the reasons for Whitland to close but I can guess. Its a massive shame as I felt the trade there was better for my stock.

I didn't go today as I didn't need anything.
Have to see what whitland decide to do after the three week closure. Rumours for a longtime that carmarthen was going to close for good but this could be its lifeline and it would be a shame if it did shutdown because its a good modern set up, just needs more homebred stock through it imo

I didn't go but the Store market report for Exeter today is now online.

Fair entry of stores back on the week, hard to tell without being there but sounds like about £50/70 head by the report.

A short entry of stirks sold to a much lower trade according to the report.

Calve trade, well a bit of demand for the best but the rest were hopeless with averages around the £10/20 mark for most breeds.

Only one vendor with store sheep in the market and they were hogs, top was something like £80 and averaged about £74 head..

Question is how long will store vendors hold onto stock for?

Right up until they realise they can’t fatten them?

Or they realize that this virus job is going to go on for months and not weeks and things aren't going to get any better for a while.

Some of the drop in store/stirk prices today will be partly due to the fact that what grass there was has all burnt off the last week with the sharp cold winds we have had.

It's a lovely new setup so long may it continue.

I think you have hit the nail on the head as there is not much traditional beef round here as there is so much dairy, so I can see why the dealers from your neck of the woods are put off.

I hope Whitland will open sooner rather than later as its a good mart for this kind of stock.

Several native bred sorts in the entry with these topping at £1065. Other strong outlying Angus heifers to £980. Other stronger sorts from £850 to £920. Younger types from £600 to £750 (170p-180p/kg). Younger farming types a real trade especially smarter sorts -these trading £750 to £900 (225p-246p/kg) with the very small young types from £600 to £750 (210p-230p/kg).
