Oh I see! So you think you can buy them for £150 less than everyone else is paying at the moment. I thought I was giving the man a current value. I take it you don’t buy many then?

Unless they can be split and culled by the main men what sucklermen want to buy or been seen to buy the also rans. I always ask myself why they are being sold

I'd better keep quiet here! ? 80% of my herd comes like this! ? If it's got a good bull calf on and doesn't look a dyer they generally end up on my wagon. Always make room for another!

380 kg weaned calves £1050 on Wednesday in Dingwall. Penfulls of them.

Great for the seller but no one else is making a penny on it even at the current beef price.
Was it out of a blue grey?
Look, it’s good to see suckler calves fetching what they are but they are being bought very much on the hope that prices will remain or even increase from where they are when it appears that they have in fact stalled.
Either it will catch a second wind and carry on up to the fabled £4/kg or reality will set in. I’ve been finishing cattle for many years and seen a lot of peaks and troughs. Neither the peaks nor the troughs last very long.
That’s not sour grapes because I’m being outbid by the endless optimists at market.

I did look at the Dingwall sale report, looks a great trade but the price quoted for “penfulls” of 380kg bullocks is more like the leading prices for that weight of bullock and the sale average was £2.40/kg.
Still a great trade, certainly no need to exaggerate it.

I wasnt exaggerating,I watched them sold, and I know the people selling them . Of course that was the top prices ,I was hardly likely to quote the tail end.

In the current climate the 'chance' buyers aren't there to just pick up the odd thing . I am a bit surprised that some of the cows and calves weren't bought and then 'split ' but you can only assume the reserve was set too high . I did buy a heifer and calf after the sale with that in mind so I will see how I get on.

Maybe the prices of stores are possibly chancy at the moment which I agree with your opinion.
What about the stores bought in March April May which were in some cases +£200 less money now being sold with an end price +£200 more?

What about the stores bought in March April May which were in some cases +£200 less money now being sold with an end price +£200 more?
They will look a good buy now

I sold a pen of 5 stots in the first week in March 392 kg £1055. They looked a very good trade at the time and people were coming out with the usual comments but they look good value now. I think it is a case of what your cost base is as a feeder some will have access to cheap feeds ,a friend of mine who finishes top end cattle says that the grades he achieves and the speed at which they finish justifies the price he pays.

E grade cattle finish a lot quicker than R grade cattle
