Prime Bulls (117) – A flyer to start the prime sales in the new auction with a tremendous show averaging a wonderful 213ppk, some staggering returns on the way as regular vendors, returning vendors and brand new vendors all enjoyed the first Thursday sale at Humbleton Park. Top price per kilo came from A S & S M Kemp, Whitwell Farm, Sherburn with a tremendous lightweight Limousin which sold to J & B Fitton Ltd, Shaw for 250ppk; amazingly the sale produced a further 8 bulls over 240ppk, three more from the aforementioned Sherburn home, a pair apiece for regulars N White of Marrick and A G Watson & Sons, Rushyford and a topper from T W Clark & Son, Frankland Farm. The battle for the top gross value was equally as competitive with eight bulls over £1900, two each from I R Appleton, Elwick and D Richardson & Co, Melsonby were in the elite club with a tremendous trio from Renton Highlaws, Morpeth. Messrs Weightman & Sons of Hallfield Farm, Easington however played the top card in the pack as they broke the magical £2000 barrier with a brut of a pure British Blonde which sold to Hartshead Meats.

Clean Cattle (167) - Credit to the vendors as several of them had certainly held on to some absolute snorters for our opening day, the wait paid dividends as the buyers came out all guns blazing and the trade was absolutely fabulous. Starting with the steers and a superstar from F & R Simpson of Square House Farm, Quebec, the 809kg Limousin sold for a breath-taking £1998 as the bullocks on the day averaged a wonderful 235ppk. Top priced steer, or should I say steers, on the day came from local producers J L Marks, Gilly Flatts Farm and also M & G Chantrell, Flash Farm, Leicestershire who both produced Limousin’s at 259ppk, either of which would be a credit to any finisher in the land. The day saw no less than 24 steers sell beyond 240ppk and 19 the top side of £1500. The heifers certainly made today a great day with a trade witnessed to rival anywhere in the land, thirteen reached at least 270ppk with the top three realising 280 pence per kilo, all locally produced Limousin’s with just 7kg between them (524-531kg) they came from Foxton Livestock, East Layton and a pair, one after the other, from J V & J A Hodgson, Summerhouse. The top gross valued heifer came from M Robinson & Sons, Staindrop with a well finished British Blue weighing 616kg and selling for £1622, amazingly this home had 3 heifers all over £1600 and were joined in that exclusive club by W B Mitchell & Sons, Morpeth; B Walker, Birch Springs and first time vendor Frank Page of Lodge Farm, Northamptonshire. The heifers on the day averaged a splendid 238ppk.

OTM (11) – Plenty of buyers for the over aged cattle as the thicker meat amongst them are very easy indeed to place, leading the pack was our old friend J M Hall of Burdon Grange, with what is for this home, a quite modest 842kg Limousin which sold for £1734. Top priced OTM per kilo came from A S Chapman of Bedale at 220ppk.

Prime Lambs (2548) – A busy day through the new sheep ring with once again a wonderful display of generosity coming from both vendors and buyers alike. The first prime lamb to be sold at this venue was kindly donated by Elliot Ritchie Bland of Micklow Hill, Piercebridge with proceeds heading to the MIND charity. The super generous buyers of DFAM again came good with the memory of our late colleague Stephen Aitken at the forefront of our thoughts, the lamb sold amazingly five times with a total of £2000 heading to the worthwhile cause, the 54kg Texel eventually sold to Thompson Wholesale Meats for £150. Further generosity came straight afterwards as the second sheep in the ring was also donated to MIND, this time gifted by R & W Todd of Toft Hill a tremendous 46kg Suffolk cross also sold for £150 to Roots Farm Shop, Northallerton. Away from the donations the lambs were a two tier trade as is becoming the trend nationally, the best fleshed lambs with thick loins are a wonderful trade, some vendors who aren’t shy with the feed bag are still a quite frankly staggering £25 better than the corresponding week last year. Some great lambs were presented, a single Texel X Beltex from C S & V Whitfield, Knitsley led the ‘real’ trade at 270ppk whilst a 56kg Dutch Spotted cross from M Robinson & Sons, Staindrop topped the gross value’s outside the charity lambs at £123.50. Over 70 lots sold above £100 this week with a sale average of £91.18 and over 205ppk, the DFAM ring remains very competitive and most importantly 100% transparent.

I saw some first cross texel 43kg @ £83, if it had been me I would of opened the gate and brought them home. As I have said before on here (tin hat on)JW is not the Auctioner that I was led to believe
I don’t think you can blame JW totally for the price drop. There’s been plenty of price drops before when NC AH and NW have been auctioneering and it wasn’t all their fault either
