Today was the Christmas Show & of Prime Lambs & Cull Ewes.
The Annual Christmas Show & Sale of Prime Lambs saw 2167 head forward. The pre-sale judging saw over 100 lambs brought out for the judge Mr M Helliwell, Milnrow to cast his expert eye over.
His Christmas Champions of 2020, a year which I’m sure we will not be forgetting in a hurry were 3 Beltex X Lambs, perfectly presented, perfectly finished from our very own chart topper Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flatts Farm, who this year is talking home her very own grammy award trophy. The champion pen of lambs were 1st prize winners of the Continental Lambs over 46kg. They weighed in at 47kg and sold to 574ppk or £270 per head, putting a perfect finish on the Christmas show they were purchased by the Judge Morgan Helliwell.
Taking home the reserve champion ticket of the day putting up a fair fight for the championship was Dan Stainthorpe, Low Grange Farm Mickelby with a pen of fantastic homebred lambs at 45kg winning the red rosette of their class. These sold to £190 per head or 422ppk, purchased by quality meat wholesalers of Boston, Lincolnshire, Chris Wright of A Wright & Sons. Dan had a cracking day showing take home an armful of rosettes. Winning the class of up to 40kg, 1st prize in the 40-46kg class and 3rd in the over 46kg.
Ali Sutcliffe, Church Farm, Wraycliffe was another one gathering up the rosette’s for his homebred lambs with 2nd prize in the 40-46kg class, 2nd prize in the over 46kg. Then it came to the ewe section when he took home the trophies again. 4 years on the trot, continuously won by ewes that have been bred from Keith Stones, Nun Cote Nook Farm, Marrick, and what a couple of pens they were, 1st prize selling to £172 purchased by Morgan Helliwell and 2nd prize purchased by Philip Bennett, of Bennetts Butchers, The Local Butcher Nationwide. In my opinion a facebook superstar. If you want to watch a man in his element, a master of his trade have a look – Bennets Butchers Club. We just need an appearance from Philip Parkin of Parkin Family Butchers, these meat men who are true exemplars of their trade, fantastic sales men of Great British Meat.
Out with the show trade for all classes were flying an SQQ average of 227.27ppk and all in average was achieved.
Saturday Sheep Sales.
Sale to commence at 11am.
Gates open 7am.
Saturday 12th December 2020
Saturday 19th December 2020
Saturday 2nd January 2021
With the unprecedented trade of late and the uncertainty of what the impending post-Brexit relationship with the EU might mean for the January hogg trade, Thirsk have made the decision to hold a Saturday prime sheep auction for the duration of December. It is our belief that vendors should take advantage of the certainty with which the Christmas trade will bring. Prices of late are unusually high and offer feeding men a quick turnaround/return on the premium stores bought early on.
Customers have expressed their support for the proposal, but have encouraged us to canvass for lambs of all sizes to meet the ethnic, export and London trades, which all look set to get busier with the end of lockdown next week.
The auction will run as a green market and if anyone has any queries don’t hesitate to contact Emma Coupland

Always. Booked some in at Bodmin today for week after next to make sure they went before tb test and was warned price might drop because of normal Xmas supply. Staff drifting back to work if possible, killing 200 today and a lot gone wales to be killed to keep supply going while bodmin gets through it's 'issues'.
Can't expect much better than that these days.
I would be very surprised if the cattle price drops much, they just are not about, most feeders are getting so many phone calls for fat cattle that they are pulling out cattle to go now that normally would only go in a months or so time.
Maybe.
9 years out of ten price drops in Dec regardless. Won't take long to see whose right/wrong!
So, update.
Just inquired the price for next week for St Merryn, Bodmin.
From booking in the price has dropped 10p/kg.
@gone up the hill don't think much of your market insight!

Oh well.
