Anybody got current prices on organic beef? As dairy farmers this year we have used Angus and Hereford semen, for the fact they should finish well on organic system, the Hereford calves are growing hell of lot faster than Angus, is this to be expected born all in one 12 week block, all on milk until 14 weeks.

Where did you get the 20% figure from?
There was a period in June and July where there was a significant increase but overall the figure up to the end of December is nearer 4% but there may have been a small decrease in the numbers of lambs born to the year before.
This is not true for the north. Higher volumes of lambs were killed late summer/backend than normal. Trade was good so folks were moving them. Light lamb trade was good too so more killed at lighter weights. I know of one haulier reckoned he’d moved that many sheep from ne England he didn’t think there could be many left. Runs 5 deckers double and triple shifted with 2/3 others hired in. I also know of a slaughterhouse which hired a large number of extra staff to cope with volume for same period

But what is volume sold measured in, is it weight of lamb hung up or numbers of lambs killed could be quite different answer for the same question!! 🙈

Well it’s the numbers of lambs we are all interested in. If these lambs went earlier than normal which all indications point to and went at lighter weights some on light lamb job then it all points to better demand later on possible shortage

Have finished Hereford just off grass here before. Much better than continentals for profitably tbh.

Holsworthy were holding an organic section in the calf ring.
I don't know if they still are.

1000s of little Cheviot lambs that would normaly be store lambs went on weigh n pay system here , I don’t think lambs will run out they never do but it might be tighter a bit than normal but they will just switch to springers quicker .
