How was Longtown?

No idea!!

Not sure how many breeding ewes were in, they said 750 on website but I'd take a guess at maybe nearer 1000 - started with them 10am. They reckoned 10,000 lambs in for by... I didn't know it was expected to be quite such a big sale.

Got down there around 9am expecting to be through around 2pm as per my usual.

They start with the Cheviots, then sell all the Blackie lambs before moving onto 'commercial' lambs.. Well come 2pm they were still selling the bloody Blackies. I was penned about 2/3 of way through what was still to come so I decided to just come home and sort out cull ewes for tomorrow

Feeding bulls were a flyer at the start seeing as they didnt look over big on fb a few days ago and ppk over the whole sale will be very good i would think. Buyers paying good money for shape and growth, shape without growth doesnt fool them. Katie doing a good job dragging the bids out of them as they tried to low start her most times. I would think sellers and buyers will be pleased with the days trade.
I watched that for a bit. Certainly looked value. She certainly did drag it out. I nearly fell asleep!

Trade a bit better in Welshpool this morning, as well as the weighbridge working properly.

Pen of 7 was Exlana & their crosses, the rest Charollais X. Another draw next week, then grass will be about done f

To be fair to the Exlanas they handle ok over their loins (for a maternal), although lacking of hindquarter.

Knighton suckled calves don't look over dear on the live feed. Then again uts not a great angle on the camera but I'd have thought most there would be well bred. Just saw the champion steer make £1200 I'd have said last year it would have been £1300+!? Some nice cattle coming through but very few over 6/7 months so wouldn't be massive.
Watched a few go through. Agree, I'd have thought they would have made more. But although tremendous shape to them, they didn't look overly big. Plus they were all going through as singles!

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 25th October

Another strong entry with a total of 647 Cattle and 2031 Sheep forward with a pleasing trade in all sections.

A total of 392 Store and Breeding Cattle on offer attracted keen interest with both stronger and long term sorts in keen demand, Steers to £1535 and heifers to £1380 both from IC Ford, Lyme Handley.

OTM cattle possibly a little easier than of late with reports of processing problems at abattoirs a significant factor but still a respectable trade to a top of £1828 for a 5 year old Limousin Cow.

More finished cattle forward with the best cattle an excellent trade with best heifers to 314p/kg but trade for the lesser sorts perhaps a little more selective but still strong with the steers averaging 208.8p/kg and heifers 220.1p/kg.

A few less calves but trade remains firm with Bulls to £305.

Another busy morning in the Sheep Shed with a trade of 1544 Lambs on offer and trade remaining strong to return an average of 237.31p/kg. Cull Ewes Best continentals to £165 Per head.

They definitely seem too pull the numbers. If there was something wrong people would walk…
They don’t seem to get anywhere near the numbers as they used to, both Tuesday or Thursday.
Archie doing them a lot of harm apparently. Pulling a lot of his old customers up to Lanark.
We’ve friends local to Longtown that won’t go there anymore and head up to Lanark.
We used to take ewes across there but get just as good or better trades at local Marts in the east.

There’s a certain mart just off the A69 seems too be quietly a flying trade for store lambs and Cast ewes!! Don’t know much about their fat lamb trade but it’s very tempting too try them with a lorry load of culls!
