Seems too be a northern thing dont know any markets round here bellying lambs out and our trade seems too match really?? Bellied and arsed all mine out a month ago before they went on turnips just for convenience but normally just put them straight in
You shouldn't do that, if you belly them before they go on turnips the mud will stick to the skin, at least if there is wool you have something to cut off.

Up here you have no option,they have to be belly clipped and crutched if going through the mart. The abattoirs will also belly clip them and charge you for it if they aren’t done.

But someone will have to belly them to keep meat from contamination. we all have to do what we can to provide clean stock.
The abattoirs would never do anything too suit me in life so I’ll not do much too suit them… can’t say it’s affected any Iv sold so far since doing them but will see in the spring with them 🤷🏻‍♂️

If there's dry dusty stuff then it crumbles as the knife goes through and the specks/pieces of mud go everywhere which then has to be trimmed off.
More to do with E-Coli contamination from when the knife is pulled down through the skin if there is mud/faeces the mud gets carried into the skin/flesh by the knife potentially causing E-coil so that meat then needs trimming off. That’s what I was always told 🤷🏻‍♂️
had a bunch of lambs last year, kept inside 18 hours before loading were rejected when arrived at slaughter and slaughterhouse turned them out to grass for a day and brought them back in to clean the bellies off. My lambs were good but the lambs on the decks above were loaded off the corner of a rape field and it was like slurry and went through the decks onto my lambs 😡😩

Lambs for the Kosher job in Manchester have to be spotless. I’ve seen lambs in the lairage with a few dirty shavings on their backs and they were taking them off with the clippers

ABP lambs dead weight are bellied on the line at no direct charge ( it will be worked in the price, it has to be) but you have to do dirty arses as they can’t do them on the line due to how the lamb is positioned

Isn’t there an issue with a lot of dust in the air when they do that, so another abattoir told me.

You're correct of course but the minimum of cuts should be made from outside to in which prevents that. But if the lambs are dirty it's a struggle whatever you do.
