Maybe cattle are shorter than we think?
Some of these retired dairy farmers have excellent quality grass as well, i agree they will learn ...fencing etc etc but buying cattle to them is an easy way to become a beef farmer, down here there are herds being sold every week many of us cant understand where they all come from...so many cows in the pipeline to sell they dont advertise to far ahead...

That/ Staff issues/ kids not wanting to be stuck to a cow's tail 365 days of the year, ever increasing red tape/ muck rules/ storage/ cost's going thru the roof and so the list goes on!

Mostly the smaller family farms going out, past years these cows would have been picked up and added to current herds that want to get larger, most of these herds have got to the point they cannot add/ do not want to add on more cows so what will happen this year with dairy cow prices who knows!

Some talk the EA etc are going to ban the spreading of dirty water as well from Sept 1 st each year and farms will need 8 months of dirty water storage on top of the 8 month slurry storage...

Just totally unviable to be able to do these things!

Don’t blame them, which other country would put up with the crap we have had to endure as an industry.

What is driving some of these very high suckled/ stirk prices is the sheer number of dairy farmers quitting and going into beef, they think they can buy these cattle then farm them dog and stick style and hardly spend a £ on them on farm and then sell them for top whack 12 months later!
Or the former suckled calf breeders that think that us that finish cattle have been making a fortune on the back of them breeding them grass is always greener and all that

The big boys come along...then they haul muck 10/15 miles and haul the food back..tearing up the roads as they do so...lots of farms have far to many cows in one place...and some farms are next to rivers etc etc...Dirty water is going to be a major problem going forward

At the moment unless you have 100% home grown feed ( with the exception of protein/minerals ) and straw and a lot more acres of grass than you need so you do not have to buy fert for grassland then the beef margins are very narrow.

Sheep job has been good untill now but the current prime price is just not enough, the prices pre xmas at the lowest sheep prices should be at any point in the year given the fact input costs are now running out control and rising daily!

Put fert on for silage and cost it out you will be at around £24 a roundbale of silage this year, a cow will eat what? 12 bales a year so they will cost £288 just in silage costs a year before you get onto all the other costs!
