There’s a butcher up your way buys limmys out of St Boswells every week she is doing very well with them. The lass that buys them buys limmys of the same farm most weeks certainly knows her stuff.

Tend to buy from Bee edge at Coldingham every week.

You wonder how you will manage but the adrenalin kicks in and you get through!
My boy was born on the 4th of Feb, we had 65 cows due to calve from the 13th. It worked quite well, feeding and changing the little one every three hours then going out to check cows. One night at the end of Feb I got him changed and asleep for 9 went out and two cows had calved so got them into pens to suckle, came in fed the boy again and went out at about 3ish to a cow, she had a set of twins with the first calf coming backwards, got her sorted came back in changed and fed the boy again and back out to feed up just after 5. It worked quite well but I haven’t dare broach the subject of having a third child for calving next year! But there is time yet...

If you ever see any of those homekill videos from NZ where the slaughter man just shoots the beasts in the field as they walk over to see them . That beef must taste good due to the fact the beast is so relaxed as it’s killed in its own environment .
That's how we did last one here, nocked it down grazing from a distance with one rifle shot, still some in the freezer, lush.
 
If cattle are put through a store period they get more grisle , younger cattle have smaller bones so a higher saleable meat yield % per carcass,smaller joints etc,less trim and tenderness , which why small butchers prefer young small smart well/fed fleshed continental heifers and spring lambs .
A butcher I spoke to once said the only time he got complaints about lamb was when he starts with the first springers.

The value is the same but unless they through a market then you miss out on the competition . You do though save on TB testing and hassle and commission.
If you have 2 people wanting them then you are in a decent position.......if thathelps 🙂🙂
Thanks and to the others why replied as well.
I always thought it was a big discount to go into an afu good to know its not. I don't have tb but it's getting closer all the time so good to know an afu is a viable option if the price difference isn't so big.
