GUTH cool your fans I agree with you…
Finished cattle should be 3k a piece by now, finished lambs/hoggs should be £200 a piece.

anyone who’s thinks current prices are good wants a slap across the giggots
Yep and those auctioneers that use that on fire emjo thingy for trades where the hoggs only averaged £122 and spring lambs not much more the other day need to be taken aside and made clear to them just what a pathetic averages they are at this time with feed going up £70/80 a ton in less than 3 months let alone all the other increased costs we now face across the board.

What these auctioneers should be saying in their reports for hoggs/ spring lambs is :

While its good that trade is going upwards it is still FAR below where it needs to be and it is NOT anywhere near high enough at this time to cover such rapid and high input costs the sector has seen the last few months and if we are to ensure that the UK does not lose its critical mass or the production of high welfare/ low carbon meat production in the sheep sector in the UK and end up dependent on imported lamb meat in these very uncertain times to feed the nation then UK farmgate prices need to rise much higher and quicker than is what they have been doing !

I don't disagree with you.

But when some people in society are so reliant on food banks , those that actually need them not those using them under false pretenses, it's a difficult sales pitch.

Edit- in fact £200/ for a lamb may see meat sales disappear to half.
🤷‍♂️

Yes you are right but people who buy lamb regularly are probably not at the food bank lamb is always high priced anyway and if all food goes up it won't seem to much worst for them,...
Was thinking the other day when my cattle buy has offered say 3.75 and tell me can't sell it well, how can they sell it now? Did made think what the reality of that is really 🤷

Not our problem if people can afford the meat or not!

Current input prices are just unsustainable in the beef and sheep sectors unless both receive much higher farmgate prices for their produce than is currently the case!

Take your organic milk, the farmgate price has been on the floor the last year or so due to various reasons, how long will organic farmers be able or prepared to produce milk at such low farmgate prices v very high input prices??

Like fuel, the price is now thru the roof but people are still queuing for an hour or more at some fuel stations to buy it to put in their cars regardless of the price.

Reality is that either wages will have to drastically increase or their will be civil unrest on the streets or worse a depression like the 1930s...

Why are cull ewes so dear and getting dearer

Old dairy cows and bull beef were previously used for mince, they have soared in price, combined with chicken nearly doubling in price, this has created the perfect storm for ewes to shoot up in price. Its not just ewes, chicken breast has gone from £3kg to over £6kg.

What I find surprising is just how many farmers couldn't care less for their animals, ewes which are days off lambing are being sent to slaughter in order for some farmers to selfishly benefit from record cull prices.

The FSA has a legal obligation to ensure animals are spared avoidable suffering, distress and pain yet they turn a blind eye to ewes lambing in abattoir lairages.

The same FSA are deliberately forcing small abattoirs to close, which have the highest animal welfare standards in the world. The level of incompetence is unbelievable, you couldn't make it up.

all ewes will be ear tagged so are easily traced…..I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If you send an animal heavily pregnant to slaughter then you get a thousand pound fine for each animal….that’ll learn them

You would be amazed how many are in lamb it makes my blood boil.

Even the offal lorry driver was peed off last week, had he not been a farmers son himself he said he would have had no objections to sending a video of the abattoir vet and a skip full of unborn lambs to The Sun, the BBC and to Boris and his wife, but he knew the negative impact it would have on genuine caring farmers.

Well it can’t be hard to find the farmers who sent them in. The abattoir should be informing trading standards
