To be fair, he was acting on the information he'd been given by incompetent scientists. The one 'expert' was predicting BSE would kill half the population and another group had found that the sheep's brains they'd been looking at were full of BSE prions, showing it had jumped the species barrier.

The first was using models that have clearly been incredibly inaccurate, and the second lot of numpties nearly culled the entire UK sheep flock because they'd made a mistake, and actually been looking at the brains of cattle that had died of BSE.
Apparently that cull came VERY close to happening on the back of that 'data'.
It really makes you wonder how such intelligent people with fancy degrees and masters etc can hold any credibility at all when they make major f**k ups on an alarmingly regular basis…

I know a lot of well educated, thick people and a lot of badly educated, razor sharp people.
I know which I’d rather take advice from!
I’ve had some belting arguments in the pub with well educated thicko’s before now. Usually when they try too tell me my job or something linked too the countryside (banning heather burning and its link too increased out of control moor fires is a good one) I come out of the pub 6 inches taller and feeling very refreshed. 😂 the Mrs just moved away when she senses I’m warming up too a good argument.

Hope so.but I bet my idea of a rise an theirs are very different.
I think they’re going to have to get used to fighting for them. There’s 2.5% less calves claimed last year and the number of cows that have gone and are going is getting serious. This September/October will be crunch time if folk are looking at an expensive winter of feeding without a decent return they are going to walk. There’s a number that have made the decision already by not putting the bull out lets hope that the abattoirs see sense and keep the price rising because that’s the only thing that will prevent folk leaving the industry.

Is that more to do with headage sub stopping though? Alot of the welsh commons/hills etc were smothered in sheep when headage was on but destocked once it was linked to acerage
For some farmers is was the final push into retirement, some stopped keeping sheep, those of us who are left are in an environment scheme with reduced stocking, whatever the reason, there's far less sheep than pre f+m

Just discussing this on saturday with my pall and we got round to listing others other than the farmer who make a living out of cattle ….. if the cattle lost critical mass omg 😱

Usually the people with C or lower grades that can afford to employ the people with A grades makes you think doesn’t it!!

it’s bad enough having an argument with them in the pub, it’s a whole lot worse when they get a job with AHDB/NE/RPA/EA/NFU etc 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
