I would like to see some data about the sheep flock halving, trying to find some i came across a farmers weekly story in 2018 that said sheep numbers were at there highest since 2000. The 30 million number quoted would of been total sheep too and not breeding flock i think.
In 2008 the uk breeding ewes numbered about 13.7 million and in 2021 it was 14.2million
I think it’s more to do with sheep moving from the hills to the lowlands, yes agree been improving in breeding but more tondo with the difference in breeds kept. The flock numbers were very high when the Headage payment was made, but many of these were small unproductive sheep.
Numbers of ewes have been relatively stable since 2008 as you say with a fall in 2020 with expectations that Brexit would cause problems.
Many farmers have improved efficiency by using self replacing flocks and using EBV's to improve outputs. Average carcass weights have increased significantly and good weather in the main lambing seasons recently have meant more lambs have survived.
In 20 years we have increased our prolificacy by well over 30% and finished weights by over 25% so output of meat has increased significantly.
Will numbers of ewes increase again? I somehow doubt it in the short term as costs of stock and feed will reduce profitability.

Not this year maybe, but there’s a lot of years they would leave arable for dead.I don’t care what anyone says the lowlands will never replace all those hill ewes. Competition for land will guarantee that. Let’s face it ewes are ok but they are no great money spinner compared to arable
Oil seed rape is looking fantastic down here , £1000 ton .Not this year maybe, but there’s a lot of years they would leave arable for dead.
Yes but who wants the work, my guess is a lot of these smaller flicks will disappear and be replaced by stewardship elms, whatever. Not this year maybe, but there’s a lot of years they would leave arable for dead.
You’ve hit the nail on the head,it’s all about the work.Yes but who wants the work, my guess is a lot of these smaller flicks will disappear and be replaced by stewardship elms, whatever.
I did exclude this year, it looks as if it’ll make millionaires of a few!!Oil seed rape is looking fantastic down here , £1000 ton .
And here, the 300 ewe flocks have largely disappeared. Not in the S East, the number of sheep in this area has continued to decline. Most small flocks and quite a few larger ones have quit.
It may be different in other areas.
6 months work , the job is ill divided .I did exclude this year, it looks as if it’ll make millionaires of a few!!
Not as much as they should be i imagine. £130 atm I guess.Ok. Prediction time. Lleyn ewe lambs coming in for shearing tomorrow. High index sires, very good dams. Weights topping out at 65kg plus

Last two years sheep have been significantly more profitable for us per acre than arable.I don’t care what anyone says the lowlands will never replace all those hill ewes. Competition for land will guarantee that. Let’s face it ewes are ok but they are no great money spinner compared to arable
