my dad was on about this the other day.then I said where the hell we gonna find any arable land around here!?I can't understand why the pure livestock boys dont contract
farm large acreages of arable ,after all your all due a holiday.
Milk at 40+ppl , milk them during peak lactation and then cull them. I doubt there will be many cheap cattle if beef is £5/kg this winter tbhNo one seems to be able to answer why the dairy cow trade is holding up so well considering all the dispersal sales.

We only grazed the new leys this winter. Got to graze them, or they'll be too strong before the land will carry cattle. Made silage yesterday, earliest for a long while. Crop was plenty decent, but the mower was covered in rust from the grass - I think there may have been a discussion about the feed value of overwintered grass on here before. Are many people going to be seeking winterkeep sheep to eat there precious grass next winter?
Every blades going to be a prisoner with fert prices where they are.
Be better carrying heavier covers of grass over into springtime?
I've only had one cider but after a crateful it might be a goer.View attachment 1036589If you want to grow some rice you can rent this for £300 acre hiy !
We were same price on the year. End of sale so think that helped, was cheaper at the start.I was there, bought nothing. The plainer end were £120 - £140, next grade up to £160, then better end £160+ generally. The pure texel hoggs would inflate the average a lot for a very plain show of commercial hoggs.
Dont worry they are all depressed tonight...carry on as you do have conviction in your own judgement and everything will be fine, too many worrying about what their mates are doing..That's me just in from dosing the dry hoggs I purchased today at UA Stirling and filling up the lamb feeders I didn't have time to do before I left for Stirling.
It looks like reading the last four pages on here is the third thing I've done wrong today.
Are you happy with them?? What breed were you buying??That's me just in from dosing the dry hoggs I purchased today at UA Stirling and filling up the lamb feeders I didn't have time to do before I left for Stirling.

What breed and how much do you want for them?
I’d be interested in some Suffolk x hoggs if you had any?
Well for all the doom and gloom, I’ve been away for a couple of hours and buyers are queuing up for the hoggsThere going mad for them now.
God loves a trier they tell me.Well for all the doom and gloom, I’ve been away for a couple of hours and buyers are queuing up for the hoggs
On a serious note they are a mixture of home bred Tex x Chev Mule and Suff x mule. Plan is to shear this week sell the Suffolks Mid summer for early lambing and Tex x a bit later. Last year with trade as it was I couldn’t afford to keep the texels and they were sold in the fat
The Suffolks were bought as well bred mixed strong stores with a view to spreading my chances with the ewe hoggs if the spring Hogg trade wasn’t as fast.
Time will tell if my marketing strategy is the right one
It’s hard when you enjoy buying and selling sheep, I’ve tried counselling but it didn’t work !God loves a trier they tell me.
actually…
I seem too hear that a lot…
Buying and selling sheep is definitely better therapy than any quack can offer! It’s hard when you enjoy buying and selling sheep, I’ve tried counselling but it didn’t work !

I think you should buy one of those upsidedown wok-style hats, roll up you trousers and crack on yourself. A lucrative contract with Uncle Ben awaitsView attachment 1036589If you want to grow some rice you can rent this for £300 acre hiy !
Uncle Ben is no more apparently, killed off as a racist stereotype harking back to slavery. I’m not sure killing a slave is any better than working one?I think you should buy one of those upsidedown wok-style hats, roll up you trousers and crack on yourself. I think he is just a faceless Ben on the packet. I’m not sure what Uncles did to be cancelled apart from dance badly at weddings
Yes, Mules. My average was a little over the sale average, thought they would have been easier to buy than last year but they weren't. I prefer to buy them now, let's me vaccinate them for abortion etc along with the home breed ones. Are you happy with them?? What breed were you buying??
