Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

funny enough theres a thread on Agricultural Matters about reducing cow numbers and ploughing up for malt barley. Just goes to show different people different ideas. You can only do what YOU think is right for your farm.

No money in corn at the current prices!

Suckler farms that are not in a TB hotspot area ( like the SW ) who do the job right with plenty of grazing/ cheap straw etc and push the calf's from day one ( creep feed ) then sell them off the cow at 9/10 months old have the best chance to make the biggest profit in the beef job.

But you have to treat your sucklers like dairy cows ( ie make sure everyone calves once a year for example ) and have the right breed/ conformation of cow to make it pay.
i disagree surely the producer taking them all the way through circa £1400 average male and female at 16 to 18 months is surely the best off tb or no tb better to keep a few less cows and keep it all no auctioneers or hauliers to worry about taking a slice you don't need many cows to get to a hundred thousand pounds

You wont average £1400 at 16 to 18 months thou! £1200/1300 is more a sensible target at that age for heifers and steers!

Ref the haulage etc, you will still have haulage and killing fees if you fhinsh them yourself and that will be not much difference than selling weaned at 9/10 months old.

Very few farmers have the skills to be both a good fhinsher and a top end suckler farmer, normally you will have one or the other set of skills.

I mean that with the risk of getting a IR/ reactor at a pre movement test is so great that it would be a nightmare if you have 20/30 cattle to sell and cant move them for 5 months at least, just such a risk with TB now and movement controls on cattle have got totally out of control.

Total respect for farmers like yourself that do it thou.
We will come unstuck one day [as the gov love their pets] and then we will be f**ked

Doesn't matter the age, plenty cattle will make £1400 at 14-16 Months.

Agree, black and white it means as a store seller im losing quite a few hundred quid a head. But then id need more sheds to house the cattle, more sheds to store different feed, more straw to keep cattle a touch cleaner, maybe staff to warrant time for extra mixes of finishing ration. Figures never as simple as they are worth this...

I was originally finishing my own. Killing bulls at well under 14 months but even they couldn't touch profitability of selling as suckled calves straight off the cow IMO. There are lots of people who want cattle but don't want the hassle of calving/rearing them. The rings are surrounded by men like that. So I thought I'd rather supply farmers with a large, insatiable demand for suckled calves rather than supply a deadweight firm who never pay over the odds, try and screw you down or tell you they don't want your cattle. How often do you hear people saying "ABP are giving over the odds for cattle.." compared to how often farmers are said to be giving too much for stores!?

TB of course effects everyone differently, but IMO it's the hassle/stress/and uncertainty which are the biggest penalties, not the finances.. Sold stores to approved finishing unit privately after a few years of selling in market. And cutting out haulage, commission, time I was actually better off in ££'s

surely if they are only transported once and sold once that means their is more left for primary producer . also the suckled producers around here seem to know how to feed cattle as they are fatter than most finishers get them and theres nowhere left to go with them !
