How can you be short of grass?? confused dot com...

As when ever i post about the very dire situation ref grass growth/ lack of grass etc young Sid pipes up and claims there is plenty of grass in Devon/ grass is growing well and some farmers have grass a foot tall that they do not know what to do with it....

But back in the real world the situation is getting very serious, it was bad before but the ground has burned so much now its back to bare soil on grazed fields the last 3/4 days here.

@kill
Plenty of places with grass. Was on a farm yesterday with over a foot of lush green grass. Our is still keeping up with majority of stock

Correct there are places with grass, they have caught thunder showers and or have deep rooting leys.

This week will now even start to bite those.

But a good thunder shower and warm ground grass will recover amazingly quickly.

Listen to the Kivells Exeter market report on FB for today!

All very well the auctioneer saying too many lambs were to lean and should be sent into the Friday store market instead as they are knackering the prime SQQ but they need to go further than that and send those lambs home and tell them to bring them back a week on Friday in the store market or pull them out of the prime sale and sell them as stores for double the store lamb comm after the prime lamb sale!
Isnt it up to the vendor when they sell ?
I thought the SQQ was for in spec lambs and anything that wasnt in spec was excluded.

True for those who are only just beginning to suffer.

However where it has really burnt back, it will take weeks to get going again after significant rain (not just a thunder shower)
The last dry summer we had (nothing like this) I had a couple dry naps that burnt so bad they still looked barren the following summer. I have much larger areas looking like that this year. I'm considering running round with some seed when we get proper rain.

Didn't get a "good" winter as it was still far drier than normal.

Also lots have cut back on spring fertiliser applications so that stressed the grass as well.
Almost a perfect storm?

This week will affect those fields that were grazed the last 10 days for sure.
