We're producing a commodity, so price is determined by the one willing to produce it cheapest.

I speak as one who made the half salary for double hours choice. There was a final salary pension and private health plan as well, but I wasn't cut out to be an employee forever and there would have been a big explosion at some stage.

It needs to change and the fact so many farmers just seem to accept it and call it a way of life upsets me , we should constantly be trying improve things for the benefit of next generation to much subservience in the industry .
Definitely wrong, no doubt about it. But I’m afraid I look at it as if I spent my time getting wound up about wages/working hours I’d never get any work done and I’d have even less friends than I have now! The farmers I know who constantly moan about the job always have a space around them at any gathering. It is our choice to farm. 🤷🏻‍♂️

My previous employ was with a recognised premium manufacturer. If a punter wanted that brand they had no choice but to stump up. Sadly there are choices of where to obtain our product.

Marketing , make our produce desirable aspirational !! You can buy a ford focus but folk want BMW Audi they pay more for it !! Their is a lot more could be done if we had s good union .

People who moan it’s a poor paid hard work job want to try something else for a week. My mum works for Amazon and one Christmas they where desperate for staff, I did a week at that on packing books for £8/hour. Monotonous work for 9 hours a day 6 days a week, not allowed to talk. And. If the work runs out can tell you not to come in and you don’t get paid. Not all people are earning £200/day for doing f**k all.

When the price drops or costs go up there’s all of us willing to make adjustments at this end to make everything fit. That’s our job to make the business work for the price we sell at. Personally for me it’s to do more work and getting contractors in to speed the process up to increase output resulting in selling more stock. A lot of folks have another job for a wage and farm on weekends and nights.
We are probably our own worst enemy’s when it comes down to it but what do you do?
That is if it’s true what was said above is right that our prices are set at who is willing to do it for the lowest price

I've been trying to think of a premium product from multiple producers, to base a model on, but one doesn't come to mind.
Surly most manufactured products are made using components from multiple small producers. You bmw would take 100’s for small companies to make a car, they are all being screwed from the top to produce cheaper or will loose contracts and go bust.

Yes. We're not exactly the screw manufacturer, more the sub-assemblies. The brand will make sure we don't become indispensable. One of the buyers' remits is to ensure there are always other options. Open book pricing is the norm.

Definitely, comparing BMWs with what we produce is not a fair comparison. The BMW is more comparative with a Waitrose ready meal (if such a thing exists), where basic ingredients are dressed up and marketed as a premium product. The BMW will have microchips in it, which will be the same as in a Ford and the producer of these will be screwed on price. That's where we are in the chain
