What's ewe trade like @gone up the hill were there a lot in this week down your way ?
Live export?
that's true but there has been strong trade for heavy lambs for a few months now, not just for the Muslim festival .
I was at St Boswells with ewes yesterday. The problem was I seemed to have caught the start of the glut, the mart was very busy. The buyers were keen on heavy, fleshy even fat ewes. But light ewes averaged £33! I averaged £37 for mine, £5-10 less than I'd hoped.I thought with the festival ewes were going to get dearer but that doesn't seen to of happened? Or is it too early? I was going to get some away next week.
I don't understand what they want? ive grazed mine before and they were saying they're too fit, so I sent them leaner and they didn't do aswell as I'd thought, my dad sent some very lean ones a couple of weeks ago and they made a fortuneI was at St Boswells with ewes yesterday. Got another 50 leaner ewes to sell. Won't be going to the mart with them anytime soon.
As an auld farmer once said to meI don't understand what they want?
Is this not the festival in France where they just slaughter thousands in the town centre?Yep.
I think this is a real issue with the sheep trade, particularly the live mart, chopping and changing what spec they want seemingly from week to week. I thought the ewes they did pay for would have been too fat!I don't understand what they want? ive grazed mine before and they were saying they're too fit, so I sent them leaner and they didn't do aswell as I'd thought, my dad sent some very lean ones a couple of weeks ago and they made a fortune

Glad I'm not selling atmI don't know the full story but I know there is a large live export order for the continent from Ireland.
It would be my worry that they're heading for some mass halal slaughter in France.
@harperfarmer how much do you reckon per head they have eaten? Creep bill killed the job when we tried it last
I started doing 50/50 pellets and homegrown barley for my hoggets. I wouldnt bother rolling it they eat it better whole. I found this out after my roller broke down so i never bothered fixing itI'll have to try and work it out. We mix 16% pellets 50:50 with homegrown rolled wheat/oats which saves a lot on pellets.
Which is my point exactly - they went condemned - someone was trying to steal the carcass!A condemned carcase would be category two animal byproduct, so you couldn't get it back.
If you have anything condemned, ask for a rejected meat receipt to be completed by the vet or meat inspector.
There are some rogues in the meat trade, no doubt about that.Which is my point exactly - they went condemned - someone was trying to steal the carcass!
Well you can knock 10p a kilo off for commission and haulage so you're not far awayWhat do you think would be a fair price ppk for nice shape dairy bred blues direct from farm. They are 15months and 450 - 500 kg.
Is £1.90 / kg about right or to cheap?
Last I sold the commission was £32 a head, so over£40 a head off by the time you add luck money on.Well you can knock 10p a kilo off for commission and haulage so you're not far away
