I bet tesco etc has done another deal with NZ/aus to bring in even more supply next spring , you might make a few £ if prepared to hold till may but i wouldnt bet on making much between christmas and easter

It is surprising that the exchange rate with the NZ dollar is similar to a year ago when most other currencies are 10 - 20% stronger. Talking to a farmer from Australia last week, their prices for lamb and beef are very high and there is no way much of that is going to come here on the present exchange rate.
New Zealand lamb supplies continue to shrink and I believe it is likely that they will look at following the Australian's into sending more lamb to these high value markets rather than be robbed by our super markets.
It is far more likely with a strong euro that supplies will go direct to Europe.

It is a concern that demand for standard and medium weight lambs is falling, but it is no surprise that there is a demand for heavies form the catering market, which is very likely to continue.
Certainly up to now more lambs have been killed and at lower weights, the lamb crop appears to be slightly down and the exchange rate is in our favour. So all in all there is no need to be talking lamb prices down.

Heard lambs averaged 1.79 up here today....cattle very dear though

Only pence away now from the £4/ kilo that I predicted a few weeks ago for clean beef(y) ( even thou no one believed me )

Sheep job is supply and demand, markets this week that have had low numbers have had an okay trade, markets with normal or high entry's trade has been down quite sharpish.

Store lambs are £10/15 head too much on the current fat trade, NZ lamb numbers are down so the supermarkets wont be able to use them as a shovel to beat our prices down, fat lambs will drop off a shade for a few weeks then start to regain ground once we head into the longest day.

Could I ask what price you want your store lambs for?

The question you should ask is : What price should fat lambs be??!

Because the lower the fat price is the lower the store price has to be so the fhinsher can make a margin.

Would be best for everyone in the chain if fat lambs were £85+ and store lambs were £60+

One way ticket if fat lambs are £70 and store lambs are £50.. no good for anyone.

Why is that then? And has that been the most recent sales this week? It wont stay that way for long when word gets out,and will be worth making the long trip North, and maybe giving some work for MacTaggert Bros etc.

Dingwall was near £44 average yesterday (10000) back near fiver on the year. Mainly cheviots yesterday. Buyers recouping after last year. As one said they're pushing the reset button

£40 average for good quality healthy lambs will have the buyers running up for the next sale!

Averaged £65 for store lambs on Wednesday, pretty pleased really, although I can't understand how they paid similar money for long vs short keep.

I kept the best pen back, I can't remember what they got to, but I'll see if it was worth keeping them.
