Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

Have you down the costings for keeping them in all their life??

No its not the way things have to go, it will only go like that if farmers like you take up the scheme, they aren't forcing you to do it now but what will happen is when they get enough farmers signed up they will change the specs/ terms etc etc massively in their favour like they have done with chickens and pigs!

Then I'll stop selling my calves as suckled calves and start finishing them. Currently I can do both enterprises on the beef side. Why would I continue to do it if there is no money in it!? I just said it's not my sole enterprise. I can keep expanding my cow numbers without having to plough capital into the finishing side of things. Maybe sometimes things that wouldnt work for you can suit others, perhaps give that theory some consideration!?

The lamb trade is already quite a bit better than this time last year when it remained in the doldrums until into March.
If I was to be a betting man I would suggest that the present increase will be sustained and that prices will move up more by the end of February.
The pound has remained weak against the euro and with Germany having resolved its political problems for the moment then it will remain weak.
However I would not put money on the prices we saw in May & June last year!!

My concern is the low price of cull ewes as there appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel for them and their consumption is very much limited to the home market. Looking at the slaughter numbers there appears to be a large number that have been kept which have either been tupped or grazed as killing numbers are down on a rolling 12 months.
Any theories on why the cull ewe price is depressed? You would have thought the trade for kebabs etc would be fairly steady?

The buyers are saying that the younger people are preferring to have lamb rather than mutton and the preparation time is much less. I am not sure people are eating as many kebabs as they were, the young people of today do not drink as much and so do not feel the need for a midnight Doner!!

A lot of mutton is eaten in Curry houses but I do not see the numbers of them increasing and they also sell a lot more cheap chicken.
We need a way of getting mutton and lamb into the Mcdonalds of the world.

Ive said this for years and all i get is
"we dont want to be associated with crap food like mcdonalds lamb is a quality product"
:rolleyes::rolleyes: :banghead::banghead::banghead: cant see rhe advsntage in a huge market like a MASSIVE fast food chain :confused::confused: j
ust think how much lamb they would use if it took off as well as sales off the back of it after people start eating lamb there theyre more likely to eat it elswere too

We've had this 'debate' somewhere else on TFF. Apparently the burger chains say they can't do beef and lamb on the same grills??
IMHO it's the perfect opportunity for the ADHB to fund some dedicated lamb grills in one of the big chains to promote lamb burgers. If they could get one chain onto lamb, the rest would all follow suit.

Yup, lamb and particularly mutton burgers are delicious and under promoted. How much more convenience do you need than something you stick under the grill and then shove in a roll?

I couldn't tell ya!
I personally haven't been to a "sh!t pack" in about 15 years
But it sounds like a genuine reason to go, I know they make all sorts of bespoke burgers these days :)
I make lambburgers though, good use for those overfats, butcher near here makes a really good patty so I take along all the fat and trimmings and crap and get patties made.
Lots of money in them tbh I put a 25% markup on them and I'm already getting texts asking when folk can have more lamb and more patties
My lambs are only 28kg or so yet
I do have some old ewes that were 'lamb' once:sneaky:
